Mt Barker V Hahndorf
Hahndorf completed a comfortable win over local rivals Mt Barker, the 4-0 result giving the Magpies a victorious clean sweep in both meetings this season.
The Hahndorf Magpies took little time to settle into the local derby, intent on attack from the outset and making good use of the space available on the large pitch. Forwards Leo Santangelo and Tom Holland put the Mt Barker defence under pressure with Hahndorf’s midfield of Aaron Noble, Jack Farrimond, Kayne Stubing and Dan Hermel dominating from the opening whistle.
The slick, even surface was conducive to the visitors’ quick passing game and they soon took the lead through Santangelo. Out on the flank, Stubing eluded his marker and put in a centring pass to Holland who set up Sanangelo with a neat layoff. The tall forward needed no second invitation and coolly slotted in the goal to get Hahndorf off to a great start.
Magpie custodian Luke Guest had a few Mt Barker attacks to contend with but a formidable defence containing Jon Lynn, Matt Norris, Scott Taylor and Steve Noble were well on top of the host’s forays forward. Mt Barker were under constant pressure from their local rivals and it wasn’t long before Hahndorf had doubled their lead, A.Noble with a precision finish after Stubing tormented the hosts with a fine cross.
Hahndorf kept up their attack, the midfield battle dominated by the engine of Farrimond and ingenuity of A.Noble with Stubing and Hermel exploiting the spacious flanks and finding Sanangelo and Holland. Hahndorf were patient with the ball, prepared to build from the back and switch play across the defensive line.
The Magpies’ endeavour paid off with the third goal of the match. Stubing again sent in a cross into the penalty box and it was poorly dealt with by Mt Barker, leaving Hermel to smash in the goal from close range. Hahndorf should have added more to their score but a combination of errant shooting and a couple of fine saves by the home ’keeper maintained the 3-0 score line at half time.
The visitors began the second half in the same vein as they left the first, the wingers of Hahndorf asking plenty of questions of the Mt Barker defence. Stubing was a constant threat with his pace and quality of delivery, Hahndorf unable to capitalise on a searching ball that slid across the face of goal.
The Magpie defence was rarely under much pressure, Guest playing as much as a deep sweeper as a goalkeeper with Taylor and Norris solid in the middle. As the half developed, Hahndorf maintained an attacking presence, largely pinning Mt Barker in their own half but unable to prise the home side open.
Holland was a busy figure up forward and set up Stubing with a clever short pass but while Stubing’s shot was true, the Mt Barker ‘keeper made a fine diving save to deny a certain score. Santangelo sent a tantalising pass across goal and it just needed the slightest of touches to send it goal-bound, but Hahndorf were unable to lay a boot on it.
Mt Barker applied some possession forward and almost caught out the Magpies but several attempts failed to find the target and Hahndorf regrouped to fortify their rearguard. Believing the best form of defence is attack, the Magpies moved forward with a combination of passes and possession before a clever through ball found Stubing who had ghosted in behind the defence. Advancing on the ‘keeper, Stubing picked his side and slotted home Hahndorf’s fourth goal.
Jordan Webber was brought on; his direct approach another threat for the hosts to contend with. Hahndorf kept attacking, with Lynn almost adding goal of the day with the match in the final ten minutes. With Hahndorf pressing for goal a half clearance fell to club stalwart Lynn and he hit a rasping half volley from 30 metres that crashed off the corner of bar and post.
Several other opportunities fell to Hahndorf but the visitors had to settle for the four-goal win by the final whistle. Man of the Match was Kayne Stubing, the speedster having had a hand in three of the goals before putting on of his own.
Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves ran out 5-1 winners against an outclassed Mt Barker unit, the win keeping the Magpies in second spot on the ladder.
Glorious sunshine interspersed with the occasional cloud set the scene at Cornerstone College, the two combatant teams eager to gain victory in the local derby. Hahndorf stared brightly, a few exploratory shots looking to find the range and test out the Mt Barker goalkeeper.
The Magpies started Nathaniel Brooke in goal with a defensive line containing Matt Medley, Luke Guest, Ash Parr and Rupert ‘The Enforcer’ Lindon. They looked to bring the ball to a dynamic midfield of Kyle Eglinton, David Grant, Sam Wood and Mike Lewington.
Starting positively, the Magpies adjusted to the slick pitch quickly and soon had Mt Barker on their heels, forwards Max Gordon-Edwards and Jordan Webber closing in on goal but unable to find the opening score. Parr intercepted a Mt Barker clearance to burst forward on the wing and he struck a fierce shot from distance. The ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Webber, but the usually accurate forward poked the ball wide. Soon after Lewington was denied from a corner, his header saved on the line by the home ‘keeper.
Hahndorf were fairly well in control of the game but found the final ball elusive, poor shot selection and some stray passes in the final third of the pitch frustrating their efforts. Grant got on the end of a good move but could not find the target. However Hahndorf eventually broke through, a fine corner met with a diving header by Guest and the ball went flying into the Mt Barker net.
The Magpies followed the goal up with some neat build up play before Webber shot directly at the ‘keeper and soon after Gordon Edwards also squandered a chance. Webber regrouped with Hahndorf’s second, a fine cross giving the silent assassin a bullet header from the edge of the 6-yard box.
At 2 nil up, Hahndorf looked to be in control of the match but the home team restored some hope with a converted penalty to make the score 2-1 at half time.
After the break Hahndorf continued to waste their opportunities, Gordon-Edwards and Webber getting in great positions but unable to finish off the good moves. Wood was having a sterling match in midfield and it was his hard work that set up Webber’s second goal, an insightful pass to the rampant forward giving him the chance to tap the ball past the advancing ‘keeper and into the net.
Wood was once again provider soon after, a surgical pass slicing open the Mt Barker defence to find Webber and he made no mistake, holding his composure to slot the ball into the corner of the net and bring up his hat trick. The Magpies found themselves 4-1 up but in truth they could have easily doubled that score but for their profligate finishing.
Jesse Konstantinoff and Gary Ledson entered the match as Hahndorf continued to keep Mt Barker pinned in their own half but the Magpies found the back of the net a harder proposition. Shots from the visitors continued to threaten the Mt Barker goal but for all their dominance, the Magpies struggled to make it count.
Ledson received a good pass from Wood to force a fine save from the home ‘keeper as Hahndorf kept the attacking pressure on Mt Barker. Wood capped off a Man of the Match performance with the final goal, a fine header finding the net after Konstantinoff delivered a pin point cross to the hard working midfielder.
The 5-1 result was a good win for the Hahndorf team, a dominant performance keeping them at the sharp end of the table.
Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs travelled to Greenock, the trip racking up the frequent flyer points but while the team contested well, it was not enough to prevent a 2-0 loss.
The Div 5 Cs had a shorter trip to Sturt Marion but the result was the same, a 2-0 win for the home side, despite stand in custodian Edmondo Palombo doing his best Dino Zoff impersonation.
Next week Hahndorf are at their Pine Avenue home to take on League leaders USC Lion in a potentially season defining match for the Magpies. The Div 4 Cs hosts the Redblue Eagles at Mylor while the Div 5 Cs are at home to the Modbury Jets.

Round 6: Hahndorf V Mt Barker
Hahndorf reigns over Mt Barker
Hahndorf Magpies V Mount Barker Crusaders
A torrent of goals brightened up a rainy day as Hahndorf steamrolled Mount Barker 10-0 to maintain their title challenge in the 6th round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd division.
Hahndorf got off to a sparkling start, pinning their opponents back from the opening whistle with Aaron Noble, Dan Holland, Jack Farrimond and Kayne Stubing taking charge of the midfield. The talented quartet supplied forwards Leo Santangelo and Matt Norris with plenty of the ball, the latter making his 100th appearance for the club.
The large crowd didn’t have to wait long before Hahndorf got on the scoreboard, defender Scott Taylor showing his striking prowess with rifling shot from the edge of the box after ten minutes. Soon after, Stubing doubled the advantage with a blistering shot that rocketed into the roof of the net, the Magpies eager to dominate derby encounter.
Mt Barker responded with some attacking moves but were unable to pierce the defences of Jon Lynn, Steve Noble, Luke Guest and Taylor. Hahndorf custodian Nathaniel Brooke was rarely troubled but the greasy surface made shots on target a tricky proposition, the ‘keeper getting his big frame behind any of the Crusaders’ efforts.
The third goal arrived via A Noble, the sprightly midfielder having a day out on the wing. Cutting into the box he eluded the Mt Barker defender before slotting the ball into the corner of goal.
Mt Barker tried to get into the match but Farrimond and Lynn were reading the play with authority and neutralised any threats. The visitors’ best chance occurred when a stray disposal by Brooke gave Mt Barker a glimpse of goal but the effort was blazed over the bar.
Hahndorf rounded out the half with their 4th goal, Stubing atoning for an earlier miss with his second after A Noble had done all the hard work to set up the prolific scorer with the simplest of tap-ins.
The second half brought further rain and further pain for Mt Barker as Hahndorf, like the weather, showed no signs of letting up. Farrimond was dominating the centre and released A Noble. The prodigiously talented youngster struck a sweet shot from 30 metres, the ball going over the stranded Mt Barker ‘keeper and finding the net with possibly the goal of the day
Holland highlighted his exemplary game with the Magpies’ 6th, a curled free kick to the top corner as Hahndorf piled on the misery for Mt Barker. The visitors then had a chance but the header went wide to add to their frustration.
Norris had been in the action all match but could not find the back of the net, several times he was denied by the overworked Mt Barker keeper, one a great double save from close in. Working his way back into fitness after a sojourn with Paris Saint-Germain, Norris was replaced by David Grant with the Magpies well on top.
A Magpie short corner brought S Noble in to the attacking play. The experienced defender crossed to the penalty area hotspot and the ball was poked in by Stubing to bring up his hat-trick. An 8th arrived soon after, Grant beating the offside trap to race through on goal and cleanly chip past the advancing ‘keeper, his tumbling celebration ending in a semi-reclined pose to the cheers of the crowd.
Mt Barker almost grabbed a consolation goal but Brooke was cat-like in his acrobatic save, leaping diagonally to tip the well struck shot over the bar and maintain a clean sheet.
Santangelo decided to get on the scoreboard late in the match, taking on a defender and blasting a shot from the edge of the box. The rout was completed minutes from full time when a through ball put no less than four Magpies in on goal. Abandoned by his teammates, the Mt Barker ‘keeper did well to deny Holland’s shot but the rebound fell to Santangelo and he slotted the ball away.
Best on the day was the industrious Jack Farrimond, the driving force of the midfield engine room with an outstanding match. Dan Holland and Aaron Noble also had very productive games to complete Hahndorf’s domination of the midfield.
Reserves
After an entertaining and at times frustrating battle, the Hahndorf Reserves left it late in the game before snatching a 1-0 victory over their local rivals, Mount Barker.
With James Nicholson in goal, Hahndorf selected a flexible defensive line-up comprising of Matt Medley, Andy Craig, Mike Lewington and Rupert ‘the Enforcer’ Lindon. The initial ten minutes saw Mt Barker take the game to the host team and the Hahndorf back line worked hard to prevent any meaningful shots on goal.
Ben ‘Beninho’ Wells, Jordan Webber, Colin Hibbert and Chris Sawers brought the midfield into play as the hosts began to gain more possession. Forwards Jesse Konstantinoff and Max Gordon-Edwards started to find openings in the oppositions defence but the Magpies were largely inaccurate in front of goal.
Several opportunities from corners went begging as Hahndorf had trouble finding the target. Mt Barker also created some openings but Craig, Lindon and Lewinton were resolute in their defence, winning most of the aerial battles and getting in some well timed tackles.
Sawers and Wells provided wide options and the Magpies moved the ball well into the attacking third of the pitch. Many times Hahndorf had trouble finding the right ball to get the opening goal and shots from Konstantinoff, Gordon-Edwards, Webber and Hibbert went astray.
A persistent rain began the second half and the match swung in Hahndorf’s favour when a Mt Barker player was sent off after gaining a second yellow card, a somewhat theatrical collapse in the penalty area not fooling the referee. However, despite the numerical advantage, the Magpies were wasteful with possession and continued to pepper the Mt Barker goal for no reward.
Kyle Eglinton and David Grant entered the fray as Hahndorf pinned the visitors back repeatedly but were not able to penetrate the overworked Mt Barker defence. The Hahndorf defence remained alert to the threat of a counter attack goal with the slick pitch conditions ready to punish a stray pass or missed tackle.
With five minutes remaining, Hahdorf finally got the winning goal after some persistent pressure in the Mt Barker half. Sawers gave a quick throw to Craig who hit a low centring ball to Konstantinoff. Working hard, a quick exchange with Eglinton put Konstantinoff in space and he stuck a fine shot to leave the ‘keeper with no chance and sent the Magpies into frenzied celebration.
Hahndorf held on for the remaining time and should have added a second but for some more errant shots and Mt Barker’s dogged defending. Best for Hahndorf were Craig, Lewington and Lindon, the trio holding Mt Barker to few genuine chances and providing a stable base for the Magpies to launch into attack.
Super Cs
The Div 5 Super Cs started the day off well for Hahndorf, with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over the Sturt Marion Thunder.
Scott Schubert put the Magpies in the lead within five minutes, a fine strike finding the corner of goal for the only score of the mostly even first half.
Hahndorf sparked into life in the second, with a goal to John Lawler before Sturt Marion answered to make it 2-1. The Magpies responded through Luke Jones, Sam Wood and Schubert with his second before Stuart Thomas rounded out the scoring with a trademark header.
Next week the Hahndorf Magpies travel to Grange to challenge the second placed USC Lion with the Super Cs 5th Div team visiting the Modbury Jets. The Div 4 Cs are also at Grange, against the Redblue Eagles.

Round 5: Hahndorf V Mt Barker
Hahndorf V Mt Barker
In the local derby, Hahndorf hosted Mt Barker on an overcast but fine day, the home side making the better of the play to run out 3-1 victors.
Wanting to sustain the momentum from the previous week, Hahndorf started brightly, moving the ball well and putting Mt. Barker on the back foot. Hahndorf’s attack featured Mike Lewington, John Lawler and Sam Heyward, Lewington making his senior debut after some excellent performances in the Reserves.
Supplying the forwards were Club Captain Matt Norris, industrious Ashley Oosh and the reliable Jon Lynn. Lee Stibbs, Wayne Forrester, Todd Newman and Kyle Eglinton kept the defence in order, utilising Hahndorf ‘keeper Mark McGrath as a deep sweeper.
Within ten minutes, the Magpies’ pressure paid off with Stibbs swinging in a strong corner. The Mt. Barker ‘keeper made an attempt to clear the dangerous ball but barely got a touch as it curled straight into the net. The delight of Hahndorf was contrasted by the dismay of Mt. Barker, the visitors taking some time to get back into the match.
However, Mt. Barker pressed forward and put in some shots but they were either off target or did little to trouble the Magpie ‘keeper. Norris was dominating the midfield, his attack on the ball and distribution giving Lewington and Heyward opportunities to add to the score. Oosh and Lynn were disrupting the movement of the visitors while Newman and Forrester strongly repelled any openings Mt. Barker created.
Norris capped off a fine half, finding Lynn with a pinpoint cross and he hit a sweet drive with his left, the ball just passing the wrong side of the post. Hahndorf went into the break in a comfortable position but looking to increase their lead.
The Magpies started the second stanza like the first and soon had a number of chances, Lawler testing the Mt. Barker ‘keeper with a top corner free kick. Norris also tried his luck from distance, his free just going wide as Hahndorf kept up the pressure.
However, the visitors replied with some sustained attacks but Newman and the wily veteran, Forrester were solid at the back, with Eglinton and Stibbs also chiming in with some timely tackles.
With the game drifting towards a Hahndorf win, Coach Steve Handley brought on Brendan Kilpatrick for the hardworking Heyward. The Magpies were forced to make a second change minutes later when the Norris and an opponent had a clash of heads, the combative captain winning the ball and seven stitches for his effort. He was replaced by Stuart Thomas, “El Presidente” slotting into the midfield role.
Kilpatrick put the ‘keeper under pressure with a well struck shot and Lewington continued to harass the defence with Oosh also trying his luck with an optimistic volley from distance. However it was apiece of “Wimbledon route one” football that put Hahndorf 2-0 up. McGrath launched a clearance and with Lewington and Lawler chasing and putting on the pressure, the Mt. Barker defender unfortunately headed past his own ‘keeper.
Soon after, Kilpatrick added a third with his head, the goal rounding off a sustained attack by the Magpies as full time loomed. To their credit, Mt Barker kept trying to breech the Hahndorf defence and finally succeeded late in the game, a solo run resulting in a score for the visitors. With minutes remaining they could have added a second but wasted a golden opportunity when Hahndorf were already thinking of the beer after the game.
In a great team effort, Man of the match was inspirational captain Norris, a ball winning powerhouse in midfield, and solid contributions from Forrester and Lewington were pivotal in Hahndorf’s third win from four games.
Reserves
Hahndorf Reserves paid dearly for their wasted opportunities as a young and eager Mt. Barker side gave the hosts a bath, scoring 5 goals to no reply and cementing their spot at the top of the table.
Hahndorf were aware of their young opponents good form this season and building on last weeks game the hosts started well. Nathaniel Brooke took his spot between the sticks, and before him a defensive unit of Ben Wells, Matt Medley, Andy Craig and the “Italian Maestro”, Edmondo Palombo kept the visitors under control.
Midfielders Lachlan ‘the Albino Yeti” McQueen, Gary Ledson, Andrew Kenny and “the Black Pearl” Owen Boyce moved the ball around well and Hahndorf had the better chances in the first fifteen minutes. Chris Hyde had two good chances at opening the scoring, one shot hitting the crossbar and the other missing to the near post. Fellow striker Tyrone Blunt featured in some moves but Hahndorf failed to capitalise on their possession.
Mt. Barker took full advantage, working the angles to get clear on goal and finishing well to go 1-0 up. Hahndorf put the goal behind them and again took hold of the midfield but further shots went wide or scraped past the post. The visitors again took advantage with two goals in quick succession, both opportunistic shots from distance that dipped under the bar with Brooke beaten.
Going into halftime 3-0 down, Hahndorf were a little shell shocked but believed they still had the passing game to get back into the match. However within five minutes of the restart, Mt. Barker had a fourth, their quick forwards springing free to finish well from close range.
A frustrated Hahndorf continued to build in attack but it was not to be their afternoon, several shots hitting the bar and post as they made good chances but could not capitalise. Substitutes Luke Jones and Kieran Evans helped push the Magpies forward but the final pass or shot was wasted by the increasingly desperate Hahndorf side.
Their match was summed up with fifteen minutes to go, as Hahndorf’s defence moved forward to take what they thought was their free kick. However, a belated decision gave the kick to Mt. Barker and they played on quickly to open up a one on one chance that the young Barker forward took well, slotting past the advancing Brooke.
Best for the Magpies was the ‘Italian Maestro”, Palombo giving all on a testing day. The loss was a bitter one for the Magpies and they will look to atone for the embarrassing loss next week.
In round six, Hahndorf are looking to maintain their winning form and will visit the undefeated Burundi Eagles, a test that could shape the remainder of the season.
