Catch up round: Murray Bridge V Hahndorf Magpies

Murray Bridge United V Hahndorf Magpies

Hahndorf travelled up the freeway to take on Murray Bridge and achieved their aim of securing three points in the chase for promotion with a workman–like 2-0 win.

The Hahndorf Magpies went into the catch-up match knowing that a full haul of points would put them in a good position in the chase for promotion and the weight of expectation drew a cautious start from the Magpies. The defence of Scott Taylor, Steve Noble, Luke Guest and Jon Lynn was complimented by Mark McGrath and the defensive unit were on alert early with the hosts keen to impress during the early going.

Aaron Noble, Dan Hermel, Jack Farrimond and Chris Sawers worked their way into the match and provided the play for forwards Leo Santangelo and Kayne Stubing as the Magpies looked to impose themselves in the game. It was a fairly even first twenty-five minutes, with Hahndorf having the better possession and goal scoring opportunities.

However, a resilient Murray Bridge defence kept the Magpies at bay and despite the visitors getting in dangerous positions, the shot selection by Hahndorf was generally wayward. Santangelo almost had the opening goal when he created space at the top of the penalty area and hit a searing shot that passed wide of the target.

Hahndorf persisted and eventually scored a fortuitous goal, Hermel’s cross mishandled by the home ‘keeper and Santangelo needed no second invitation to slot in the loose ball. The goal seemed to calm the nerves of Hahndorf and they produced some scintillating play, moving the ball quickly to leave Murray Bridge chasing shadows.

Sawers was unlucky not to finish a flowing move from defence, S.Noble finding Hermel and he released Stubing wide. The speedster raced past his opponent and put in a centring ball which Sawers met on the volley, the shot passing just wide of the top corner of goal. Hermel also had a chance when Stubing supplied another cross, but the well struck volley picked out the grateful goalkeeper.

After the halftime break, Hahndorf went looking for a second goal, the one nil lead a little precarious in the context of the match. A.Noble and Farrimond began to dominate the middle of the park and Hahndorf used the spacious flanks to get in behind the Murray Bridge defence. The build up play from the Magpies was in contrast to the final pass, the play developing through some neat passing but the delivery into the penalty area was often over hit or picked out defenders.

The Magpies were generally in control at the back and Murray Bridge never really threatened McGrath’s goal but the inkling of an equaliser remained. Several good chances fell to Hahndorf before a piece of individual skill gave Hahndorf the insurance goal it was looking for. Hermel picked up the ball thirty metres from goal and embarked on a diagonal run, rounding two defenders before blasting a shot high into the net from close in.

Hahndorf remained committed to an attacking style and pressed Murray Bridge for a third score, bringing on Jordan Webber to add to the attack. A.Noble almost celebrated his eighteenth birthday in fine style when he volleyed Taylor’s angled cross just wide of the goal with the match entering its final minutes.

The 2-0 win was another valuable three points for the team as they close in on promotion; Man of the match Aaron Noble the midfield catalyst for the Magpies as they worked their way to the final whistle.

Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves continued on their winning form with a comfortable 5-0 win over Murray Bridge, Jordan Webber hitting a deserved hat-trick to keep the Magpies within touch of second spot.

The Magpies started the match with Nathaniel Brooke in goal, the big ‘keeper behind the defence of Andy Craig, Matt Medley, Mike Lewington and Rupert ‘the Enforcer’ Lindon. In midfield, Kyle Eglinton, John Lawler, Gary Ledson and Jess Konstantinoff provided the base for the attacking spearheads of Ash Parr and Jordan Webber.

Hahndorf took the game to Murray Bridge, the team maintaining possession through some neat passing and use of the wide spaces available. Lawler and Ledson anchored the middle allowing Konstantinoff and Eglinton to range up and down the flanks. Webber and Parr were a constant threat and it was no surprise when Webber scored the opening goal, a nice passage of play resulting in Webber drilling a low shot past the Murray Bridge ‘keeper.

The main avenue of attack for Murray Bridge was through their centre forward, however Lindon and Lewington were at their miserly best to negate the impact of the target man. Hahndorf resumed with the passing game, using the wings to good effect to score a second goal. Konstantinoff linked with Parr and the robust striker put Webber through with a beautifully weighted pass. Webber closed in on goal at an angle before slipping a pass across the 6 yard box to Eglington who had the simplest of tap ins.

Hahndorf emphasised their dominance with a third goal in the half, Parr again the provider for Webber and the indomitable sharpshooter put away Parr’s low cross with a clinical finish. Murray Bridge had no real answers in unlocking the Magpie defence; Brooke was equal to any attempt at goal and the backline only gave the hosts rare glimpses of goal.

The second stanza progressed much like the first with Hahndorf using the space to dictate the match with the midfield in control and the forwards an ever present threat to the Murray Bridge goal. The home side rearranged their formation and could have pulled a goal back but Brooke made a strong save to deny them a score. The Magpies looked comfortable on the ball and built from the back, passing their way to the forward line.

Several substitutions by Hahndorf let Kieran Guest, Ben ‘Beninho’ Wells and Bob Gordon-Edwards enter the match, the trio slotting straight into the Magpie formation. Hahndorf kept the pressure on Murray Bridge but failed to find the target, Konstantinoff going close when he smashed a shot at goal only for Parr to be on the receiving end and deflecting it out of goal.

Webber restored accuracy with his third goal of the day, an incisive individual effort when he beat the ‘keeper to the ball after rounding the last defender. Further chances fell to Lawler, Parr and Konstantinoff but they were unable to trouble the score and Hahndorf wasted a few good attacks with over hit crosses.

Murray Bridge could not pierce the defence of Hahndorf and were kept busy defending in their own half. Pressure by the Magpies resulted in the fifth goal just before full time; ‘Beninho’ Wells putting in a well-placed header after Murray Bridge failed to clear a Hahndorf corner.

The result continues Hahndorf’s push for second spot with John Lawler earning Man of the Match honours for sterling his efforts. The team now turns its focus to the Cup Final against Ingle Farm on Sunday at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Cup Semi final: Hahndorf V Modbury Vista

Hahndorf V Modbury Vista

Hahndorf produced a first half assault on Modbury Vista to book their place in the Cup final, a hat-trick from in-form striker Leo Santangelo laying the foundation for a victorious 5-1 result.

Hindmarsh Stadium was picture perfect on a sunny Sunday; the dry, flat pitch a welcome change from recent surfaces and Hahndorf immediately went on the attack from the opening whistle of the Cup semi final. Earning a corner in the first thirty seconds, Hahndorf struck the opening goal in the third minute, the pace and attack of the Magpie forwards catching Vista on the back foot. Santangelo, Dan Hermel, Tom Holland and Chris Sawers exposed Modbury’s backline before Santangelo struck, his drive squeezing between defender and goalkeeper to get Hahndorf off to a perfect start.

A further three minutes passed in which Hahndorf were unrelenting in attack and doubled their lead, Santangelo once again the scorer, his speed and clinical finishing complimenting a slick move by the Magpies. The Modbury Vista team were stunned but tried to work their way into the match. However, the defence of Kyle Eglinton, Rupert Lindon, Andy Craig and Mike Lewington were equal to the challenge and Magpie ‘keeper Mark McGrath had few troubles.

The Magpies kept up their attack, midfielders Dan Holland and Aaron Noble controlling the middle and releasing Hahndorf’s sharp forward line. Santangelo was in rampant form and combined with T.Holland for Hahndorf’s third goal, Holland making good ground to tap in Santangelo’s cross from close range.

The Magpies made it a memorable twenty minutes when Santangelo completed his hat-trick in fine style. Latching on to a through ball, the marksman bore down on Vista’s goal and slotted away Hahndorf’s fourth score of the match, the cool finish giving Vista’s ‘keeper no chance. It was a stunning opening charge from the Magpies, the forwards and midfielders using their speed, passing and possession to set Vista back on their heels.

Modbury Vista lifted their game and created several chances but they couldn’t get a clear shot on goal, a few shots passing well wide of the goal and those that were on target were comfortably dealt with by McGrath. Central defenders Lewington and Lindon made the Vista forwards earn possession and the Modbury side found the final pass a difficult proposition as they struggled to make an impression on the scoreboard.

Hahndorf were enjoying the match, Noble, Sawers, Hermel and the Holland brothers finding their passing game to win the midfield possession. Hahndorf almost added a fifth just before half time, Santangelo again on the end of a defence splitting pass but he lifted his shot just wide of goal.

In the second half, Hahndorf changed their formation a little to protect their lead and to counter a more attacking opposition, Modbury Vista having little to lose by throwing more players up front. The half developed into a more even affair with both teams using the space on offer to retain the ball and play their way forward.

Lewington was particularly obstructionist to the Vista forwards, the robust defender winning most of the contested balls and dominating the aerial duels. The play ebbed and flowed, neither team able to create a clear chance during the first fifteen minutes of the half.

Hahndorf maintained their passing game, Noble notable for his industrious work in winning and keeping possession while Hermel and Sawers used the spaces on the flanks. The Magpies made their first substitution when T.Holland suffered an injury and was replaced by Gary Ledson. The hard working midfielder was straight into the match as Hahndorf kept the Vista side at bay.

However, with twenty minutes to go, Modbury Vista did get on the scoreboard, the Magpie defence blocking an initial shot but failing to clear it effectively and a Vista forward struck a solid goal to give them a glimmer of hope.

Hahndorf answered the challenge in the best possible way, maintaining their four goal buffer through Noble within five minutes of the restart. The prodigiously talented midfielder won the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unbalanced the defender before drilling a low shot into the corner of goal.

The goal effectively killed off Modbury Vista’s challenge, with players on both teams feeling the effects of the large pitch in combination with the first warm day in recent memory. Hahndorf brought on two more substitutes, Kieran Guest and Jesse Konstantinoff making a valuable appearance at either end of the ground as the Magpies looked to close out the match. Vista tied to add to their score but the Hahndorf defence remained resolute under pressure and gave the northern suburbs side no joy before the referee whistled for full time.

It was an emphatic and deserved victory for Hahndorf, set up by a blistering four goal burst in the opening twenty minutes to take them to the Cup final in two weeks time. All players put in a tremendous effort, the team working as a unit at both ends of the pitch and dictating terms in the middle.

Next week Hahndorf play a League catch up match, a valuable three points on offer at Murray Bridge to maintain the Magpies push for promotion.

Round 16: Hahndorf V USC Lion

Hahndorf V USC Lion

The business end of the season witnessed the two top teams in the 3rd Division of the SA Amateur Soccer League, Hahndorf and USC Lion battling it out for top honours. When the final whistle was blown, neither team had managed to score in an entertaining encounter, the nil all score leaving Lion on top with Hahndorf a few points behind in second.

The pitch was soft underfoot but with no Reserves match taking place the ground was in pretty good condition considering the rain during the week. Hahndorf suffered an early setback when first team debutant Sam Wood twisted a knee minutes into the match and had to be substituted, Jon Lynn stepping in for the young midfielder.

As could be expected from the two form teams, the opening exchanges were cagey with both sides finding the pace of the pitch. Hahndorf started Mark McGrath in goal with Lynn, Scott Taylor, Matt Norris and Steve Noble taking up the defensive duties. The midfield of Tom Holland, Jack Farrimond, Luke Guest and Aaron Noble were up for a busy day and forwards Kayne Stubing and Leo Santangelo were equally keen.

The midfield was seeing the majority of the action with USC Lion just shading possession, however both teams were looking to impose themselves on the match but despite a number of attacking forays, there were few chances on goal. A couple of speculative shots by Lion gave McGrath no problems while Hahndorf had a good opportunity when Holland set up S.Noble on the edge of the area but the low strike was wide of the mark.

To the delight of the home supporters, the visitors earned a couple of yellow cards in the first half hour after a bit of niggle between the teams, the referee not tolerating any backchat. Another chance fell to Hahndorf when Taylor’s free kick caused concern in the Lion penalty area, but A.Noble couldn’t get enough bend on his shot and it just passed wide of the post.

Lion then had the best chance of the half, a header skimming the crossbar after a good corner. But then the match turned a little sour for the visitors when they had a player sent off after earning two yellow cards in thirty seconds. Both cards were for dissent, the offender not learning after his first yellow and his continued verbal abuse getting him a subsequent second.

The man advantage gave the Magpies a little more space and they put together some nice attacking moves but were unable to threaten the Lion goal before the half came to an end.

Hahndorf started the second half well, using their numerical advantage to good effect and holding possession as they sought to unpick the Lion defence. A good chance fell to the Magpies when A.Noble headed on a lofted pass and the Lion goalkeeper rushed out to clear the ball but missed it. Fortunately for the visitors, a defender was able to hack the ball to the sideline before A.Noble could get to it.

Hahndorf were enjoying more of the play but were finding the Lion defence in good form, the hosts doing well but finding their final passes going astray. The Magpies controlled the tempo, Taylor, S.Noble and Norris starting the moves from the back and building through the midfield.

A free gave Taylor the chance to put the ball in a dangerous position and it drew the Lion ‘keeper out to punch the ball away. Hahndorf gathered the loose ball and after several passes it was Guest who chanced his luck with a shot that passed wide of goal.

Hahndorf brought on Jordan Webber to unsettle the Lion defence as the match entered the final twentyfive minutes. Guest was relishing his midfield role and almost put Santangelo through on goal but the Lion ‘keeper snatched the ball away at the last moment.

The defence of Lion and Hahndorf were dominating proceedings; however a few opportunities kept the match in the balance. A Magpie appeal for handball in the penalty area was turned down and a Lion attack saw a shot go past the post. Hahndorf answered with an effort that went over the crossbar as both teams were finding the goal a difficult target to hit.

A.Noble and Santangelo combined to set up Guest but while the shot was low, it was also wide. A Lion attack put them in a promising position but Lynn cleared the danger with a timely header. The supporters of both teams were in fine voice, urging on the players and engaging in a bit of banter but it was Hahndorf who were making most of the running.

Farrimond went wide with a shot after Hahndorf had built up a period of pressure, the industrious midfielder, together with Guest, getting plenty of the play. In the final minutes a quick free kick put Webber down the flank and he sent in a fine cross for A.Noble but as he shaped to volley in the ball, a slight deflection, appearing to come off the Lion defenders arm, took the ball off his boot.

It was to be the last notable action in the day, the nil-all result keeping the status quo at the top of the table. Man of the match was Steve Noble, his direction and endeavour in defence a stable foundation from which many of Hahndof’s positive moves originated.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies are away to the Adelaide Pumas while the Div 4 and Div 5 Cs are both visiting Adelaide University.

Round 15: Mt Barker V Hahndorf

Mt Barker V Hahndorf

Hahndorf completed a comfortable win over local rivals Mt Barker, the 4-0 result giving the Magpies a victorious clean sweep in both meetings this season.

The Hahndorf Magpies took little time to settle into the local derby, intent on attack from the outset and making good use of the space available on the large pitch. Forwards Leo Santangelo and Tom Holland put the Mt Barker defence under pressure with Hahndorf’s midfield of Aaron Noble, Jack Farrimond, Kayne Stubing and Dan Hermel dominating from the opening whistle.

The slick, even surface was conducive to the visitors’ quick passing game and they soon took the lead through Santangelo. Out on the flank, Stubing eluded his marker and put in a centring pass to Holland who set up Sanangelo with a neat layoff. The tall forward needed no second invitation and coolly slotted in the goal to get Hahndorf off to a great start.

Magpie custodian Luke Guest had a few Mt Barker attacks to contend with but a formidable defence containing Jon Lynn, Matt Norris, Scott Taylor and Steve Noble were well on top of the host’s forays forward. Mt Barker were under constant pressure from their local rivals and it wasn’t long before Hahndorf had doubled their lead, A.Noble with a precision finish after Stubing tormented the hosts with a fine cross.

Hahndorf kept up their attack, the midfield battle dominated by the engine of Farrimond and ingenuity of A.Noble with Stubing and Hermel exploiting the spacious flanks and finding Sanangelo and Holland. Hahndorf were patient with the ball, prepared to build from the back and switch play across the defensive line.

The Magpies’ endeavour paid off with the third goal of the match. Stubing again sent in a cross into the penalty box and it was poorly dealt with by Mt Barker, leaving Hermel to smash in the goal from close range. Hahndorf should have added more to their score but a combination of errant shooting and a couple of fine saves by the home ’keeper maintained the 3-0 score line at half time.

The visitors began the second half in the same vein as they left the first, the wingers of Hahndorf asking plenty of questions of the Mt Barker defence. Stubing was a constant threat with his pace and quality of delivery, Hahndorf unable to capitalise on a searching ball that slid across the face of goal.

The Magpie defence was rarely under much pressure, Guest playing as much as a deep sweeper as a goalkeeper with Taylor and Norris solid in the middle. As the half developed, Hahndorf maintained an attacking presence, largely pinning Mt Barker in their own half but unable to prise the home side open.

Holland was a busy figure up forward and set up Stubing with a clever short pass but while Stubing’s shot was true, the Mt Barker ‘keeper made a fine diving save to deny a certain score. Santangelo sent a tantalising pass across goal and it just needed the slightest of touches to send it goal-bound, but Hahndorf were unable to lay a boot on it.

Mt Barker applied some possession forward and almost caught out the Magpies but several attempts failed to find the target and Hahndorf regrouped to fortify their rearguard. Believing the best form of defence is attack, the Magpies moved forward with a combination of passes and possession before a clever through ball found Stubing who had ghosted in behind the defence. Advancing on the ‘keeper, Stubing picked his side and slotted home Hahndorf’s fourth goal.

Jordan Webber was brought on; his direct approach another threat for the hosts to contend with. Hahndorf kept attacking, with Lynn almost adding goal of the day with the match in the final ten minutes. With Hahndorf pressing for goal a half clearance fell to club stalwart Lynn and he hit a rasping half volley from 30 metres that crashed off the corner of bar and post.

Several other opportunities fell to Hahndorf but the visitors had to settle for the four-goal win by the final whistle. Man of the Match was Kayne Stubing, the speedster having had a hand in three of the goals before putting on of his own.

Reserves

The Hahndorf Reserves ran out 5-1 winners against an outclassed Mt Barker unit, the win keeping the Magpies in second spot on the ladder.

Glorious sunshine interspersed with the occasional cloud set the scene at Cornerstone College, the two combatant teams eager to gain victory in the local derby. Hahndorf stared brightly, a few exploratory shots looking to find the range and test out the Mt Barker goalkeeper.

The Magpies started Nathaniel Brooke in goal with a defensive line containing Matt Medley, Luke Guest, Ash Parr and Rupert ‘The Enforcer’ Lindon. They looked to bring the ball to a dynamic midfield of Kyle Eglinton, David Grant, Sam Wood and Mike Lewington.

Starting positively, the Magpies adjusted to the slick pitch quickly and soon had Mt Barker on their heels, forwards Max Gordon-Edwards and Jordan Webber closing in on goal but unable to find the opening score. Parr intercepted a Mt Barker clearance to burst forward on the wing and he struck a fierce shot from distance. The ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Webber, but the usually accurate forward poked the ball wide. Soon after Lewington was denied from a corner, his header saved on the line by the home ‘keeper.

Hahndorf were fairly well in control of the game but found the final ball elusive, poor shot selection and some stray passes in the final third of the pitch frustrating their efforts. Grant got on the end of a good move but could not find the target. However Hahndorf eventually broke through, a fine corner met with a diving header by Guest and the ball went flying into the Mt Barker net.

The Magpies followed the goal up with some neat build up play before Webber shot directly at the ‘keeper and soon after Gordon Edwards also squandered a chance. Webber regrouped with Hahndorf’s second, a fine cross giving the silent assassin a bullet header from the edge of the 6-yard box.

At 2 nil up, Hahndorf looked to be in control of the match but the home team restored some hope with a converted penalty to make the score 2-1 at half time.

After the break Hahndorf continued to waste their opportunities, Gordon-Edwards and Webber getting in great positions but unable to finish off the good moves. Wood was having a sterling match in midfield and it was his hard work that set up Webber’s second goal, an insightful pass to the rampant forward giving him the chance to tap the ball past the advancing ‘keeper and into the net.

Wood was once again provider soon after, a surgical pass slicing open the Mt Barker defence to find Webber and he made no mistake, holding his composure to slot the ball into the corner of the net and bring up his hat trick. The Magpies found themselves 4-1 up but in truth they could have easily doubled that score but for their profligate finishing.

Jesse Konstantinoff and Gary Ledson entered the match as Hahndorf continued to keep Mt Barker pinned in their own half but the Magpies found the back of the net a harder proposition. Shots from the visitors continued to threaten the Mt Barker goal but for all their dominance, the Magpies struggled to make it count.

Ledson received a good pass from Wood to force a fine save from the home ‘keeper as Hahndorf kept the attacking pressure on Mt Barker. Wood capped off a Man of the Match performance with the final goal, a fine header finding the net after Konstantinoff delivered a pin point cross to the hard working midfielder.

The 5-1 result was a good win for the Hahndorf team, a dominant performance keeping them at the sharp end of the table.

Super Cs

The Div 4 Cs travelled to Greenock, the trip racking up the frequent flyer points but while the team contested well, it was not enough to prevent a 2-0 loss.

The Div 5 Cs had a shorter trip to Sturt Marion but the result was the same, a 2-0 win for the home side, despite stand in custodian Edmondo Palombo doing his best Dino Zoff impersonation.

Next week Hahndorf are at their Pine Avenue home to take on League leaders USC Lion in a potentially season defining match for the Magpies. The Div 4 Cs hosts the Redblue Eagles at Mylor while the Div 5 Cs are at home to the Modbury Jets.

Round 14: Adelaide University V Hahndorf Magpies

Adelaide University V Hahndorf Magpies

In difficult conditions, Hahndorf responded well to an early setback to outplay Adelaide University with a 4-1 win to maintain second place in the 3rd Division of the SA Amateur Soccer League.

Hahndorf opened play with Mark McGrath in goal, presiding over a defensive line containing Scott Taylor, Steve Noble, Matt Norris and Jon Lynn. The pitch did the visiting Magpies no favours, boggy areas and puddles making the passing game a lottery at times. The Magpie midfield of Jack Farrimond, Dan Hermel, Kayne Stubing and Aaron Noble adjusted their play give forwards Tom Holland and Jordan Webber a range of attacking options.

The opening exchanges were relatively even but a rare mistake in defence gave Adelaide possession close to goal and they converted their chance to take a 1 nil lead. Hahndorf didn’t dwell on the misfortune and hit back within ten minutes to restore parity. A.Noble made no mistake from the penalty spot after an infringement by the University ‘keeper after some attacking play by the visitors.

Hahndorf kept up the pressure and added a second goal, Webber’s determined run and shot blocked by the University ‘keeper. However Holland followed up with a telling strike, his accurate left foot giving Hahndorf the 2-1 lead.

Hahndorf were providing the better football but the Adelaide side were also putting some opportunities together and kept the Magpie defence on alert. Farrimond was revelling in the conditions, his robust challenges helping to win the midfield battle.

Hahndorf took a 3-1 lead into half time courtesy of a sublime piece of skill from A.Noble. Receiving the ball some 35 metres from goal, the sprightly youngster jinked sideways to create space and then launched an audacious chip that cleared the ‘keeper to nestle in the back of the net. Stubing almost added a fourth, but just failed to get on the end of Holland’s outstanding cross, the ball sliding past the speedster.

The second half started in a fairly even tussle, neither team able to create a clear shot at goal with the respective defences in a miserly mood, Taylor and Norris particularly adept in cutting out attacks.

Hahndorf went looking for goals and could have had a couple more, Hermel’s short corner creating confusion in the six-yard box before it was hacked away to safety by Adelaide. Leo Santangelo was brought into the match to add some glamour to the mudfest and he should have scored soon after his introduction. The tall striker, usually a model of consistency, was presented with a great chance after the ‘keeper could only parry Hermel’s shot into his path but Santagelo slipped at the vital moment and spooned the ball over the bar from close range.

Both teams lost a player each after the referee awarded a yellow card for dissent in the same incident, leaving the play open for the remaining fifteen minutes. Hahndorf brought on Max Gordon-Edwards and the talented midfielder was immediately into the action with Holland setting him up with a great pass; the shot however went straight to the Adelaide ‘keeper.

He was to make amends within minutes however, a long corner giving him two chances to cut the ball back, the second finding Norris and the central defender struck a superb volley across goal into the top corner. Santangelo and Gordon-Edwards combined for a further chance but the shot went wide as Hahndorf finished the match with better options than their opponents.

The 4-1 win was a deserved reward for the Magpies in trying conditions and maintains their second place on the league ladder. Man of the match was Tom Holland who had a brilliant game, a goal and some inspirational passing a highlight on the overcast day. He was ably supported by Aaron Noble, who scored goal of the day and Scott Taylor, a pillar of strength in defence.

Reserves

The Hahndorf Reserves met a determined Adelaide University side on a treacherous pitch with both teams having to settle for a share of the points in a 1-1 draw.

Overnight and morning rain drenched the Adelaide University pitch leaving it like a wetlands rather than the parklands but with the ground having a reasonably firm base, the referee decided play would begin. Both teams spent the opening minutes gauging the conditions, the ball prone to sticking in some areas and skipping through in others.

The Magpies started Nathaniel Brooke in goal, the big keeper making a strong recovery from head injuries a fortnight ago and he was immediately on his game and commanding the penalty area. Sam Heyward and Max Gordon-Edwards formed a potent strike force in front of a dynamic midfield containing Kyle Eglinton, David Grant, Gary Ledson and Ash Parr.

Hahndorf weathered a few University attacks, defenders Matt Medley, Andy Craig, Rupert ‘The Enforcer’ Lindon and Mike Lewington equal to the early examination and adjusting their play to the conditions. Working into the match, the Hahndorf midfield put together some tidy moves with Eglinton and Parr the focus on the flanks, the wide regions more conducive to flowing play.

Both teams had chances at goal but Adelaide had difficulty finding the target while the Hahndorf efforts found the University ‘keeper in good form, diving to save several shots from Heyward, Parr and Gordon-Edwards. However, it was Hahndorf who were beginning to take the upper hand and they capitalised with a goal after a good build up.

Grant pounced on a loose ball to find Heyward and he sent a pass wide to Parr, the bustling winger deceiving his marker before bursting into the penalty area and arrowing a low shot at goal. The University ‘keeper dived left but could only parry the ball and it fell to Gordon-Edwards who drilled it into the bottom corner of the net to give the Magpies the lead.

Hahndorf had more opportunities to add to their score in the half but found the Adelaide custodian the main impediment. A throw to Ledson opened up a chance for Gordon-Edwards but his sizzling shot went just wide with the ‘keeper beaten.

In the second half Hahndorf opened with some scintillating play but while they pinned University back, the Magpies could not generate a clear shot at goal. Grant, Parr, Ledson and Eglinton controlled the play, bringing Gordon-Edwards and Heyward some opportunities but the visitors failed to find a decisive strike.

Adelaide University persevered however and found an equaliser through a quick break, the well-struck shot leaving Brooke little chance. The goal bolstered the home side and they found renewed purpose and put Hahndorf under increasing pressure.

Hahndorf made a couple of substitutions, bringing on Ben ‘Beninho’ Wells and Jesse Konstantinoff. Gordon-Edwards was in sparkling form, his deceptive pace causing Adelaide problems and on one enterprising run he had only the goalkeeper to beat but a good save denied Hahndorf their second goal.

Adelaide had chances of their own but also found their aim astray and despite the attacking intentions of both teams the match ended with a draw, the same result as earlier in the season. Man of the match for Hahndorf was Gordon-Edwards, the young forward showcasing his skills in trying conditions.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs enjoyed a 3-1 win over the Dragon Rangers, a great reward for the team after a difficult season. The Div 5 Cs were on the wrong end of a 2-1 score-line against the Vipers, the home referee playing a major role in the result.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies battle for local bragging rights when they visit Mt Barker at the Cornerstone College ground. The Div 4 Cs are away to Greenock while the Div 5 Cs have a shorter trip when they visit Sturt Marion.

Cup 1/4 Final: Salisbury Inter V Hahndorf Magpies

Salisbury Inter V Hahndorf Magpies

The Hahndorf Reserves booked a Cup semi-final berth with a resilient 2-1 win over their more fancied Sunday Div 2 opponents, Salisbury Inter.

Travelling away to the far reaches of Northern Salisbury, the Hahndorf Magpies got off to a tentative start against the home side, as Inter used their local knowledge to good effect. The high and uneven bounce put the Magpie defence of Kyle Eglinton, Luke Guest, Andy Craig and Rupert “The Enforcer” Lindon under pressure in the opening exchanges, the match off to a pacy start.

Goalkeeper Mark McGrath was called into action as Inter used their speedy wingers to put in some dangerous crosses but the Hahndorf custodian was in good position to comfortably save the headed Inter chances.

Hahndorf’s midfield of Dan Hermel, Aaron Noble, Mike Lewington and Chris Sawers began to make their presence felt, with some neat exchanges almost unpicking the defence of the hosts. Ball control was a tricky proposition on the large, bumpy pitch and players from both teams were quick to pounce on any loose play as the match developed into a fairly even affair.

Inter relied on the flanks in attack, giving Eglinton and Craig plenty of work while Guest and Lindon were resolute in their defence of the middle. For Hahndorf, Hermel and Sawers exploited the wide spaces on offer and combined with frontrunners Tom Holland and Leo Santangelo to create a few openings for the Magpies.

It was from using the width that Hahndorf took the lead, Noble and Holland getting the ball wide to Hermel. The flighty winger forged a path to the dead ball line before cutting back to Santangelo and he tucked the ball into the net with a brilliant piece of first time skill.

Inter hit back at Hahndorf, a cross almost bringing an immediate reply but, under pressure from the defence, the shot was scythed wide. Hahndorf regrouped and began to take control through midfield, exchanges from Hermel, Sawers, Noble, and Lewington giving Holland and Santangelo more scope.

Hahndorf grew stronger in attack and added a second goal with ten minutes left in the half. Sawers benefitted from some strong play in the middle of the pitch and raced behind his defender before drilling a low ball to the centre. The ball flicked off Santangelo and his marker to carry through to Hermel who was charging in from the corner of the box. Steadying, Hermel drove the ball into the back of the net to give the Magpies a deserved two-goal lead.

After half time, the Hahndorf team expected Salisbury Inter to go on the attack in an attempt to get back into the match. The home side did not disappoint and the Magpies were forced to defend in the opening minutes. Guest and Lindon worked hard to blunt the Inter attacks and in truth, few genuine chances fell to the home side; those shots that did threaten goal were comfortably dealt with by McGrath.

With Inter intent on attack, it left them a little exposed in defence, leaving Hermel, Santangelo, Holland and Sawers to find more space as the match progressed. Several chances from both teams went begging as the intensity lifted, but Inter persisted and eventually scored, the well taken goal a result of some quick movement that caught out the Magpies’ defence.

With momentum beginning to favour the hosts, Hahndorf drew on their team spirit to neutralise Salisbury’s offense. The Magpie defence rallied to keep Inter from getting a clean strike on goal, leaving McGrath to tidy up any through balls. Hahndorf continued to challenge the Inter defence, Holland and santangelo finding openings. The attack on the ball was intense from both teams but in a rush of blood, a home player was shown the red card when he attempted to remove the Magpie players’ head with his arm.

Chasing the game and a man down with twenty minutes remaining, Salisbury Inter throw caution to the wind and pushed forward in search of the equaliser. This left acres of space on the immense pitch and Hahndorf retained their shape and composure to release Inter’s pressure by playing wide.

Several free kicks to Inter gave them a chance or two but they were unable to get a telling touch on the ball, Hahndorf determined to keep them out. The open play gave the Magpies several opportunities to put the match beyond Inter but the visitors too had trouble finding their range; Hermel going closest with his shot just sliding past the post.

Hahndorf made a couple of substitutions, bringing on Ben ‘Beninho’ Wells and the experience of 1996 Cup winner, Bob Gordon-Edwards to cause havoc in the front line. Hahndorf continued to resist the attacks of Inter, the home side getting more desperate as time wound down. Several breaks by the Magpies should have seen them extend their lead, but Santangelo had his solo run halted by the good save of the Inter ‘keeper and last gasp defending denied Holland other chances.

Eventually the referee signalled the end of the match and brought a cheer from the travelling faithful as Hahndorf celebrated a hard fought victory and a step closer to the Cup final. It was a tremendous effort by the Hills side, the entire team giving everything to deservingly advance to the next round, which will be played at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Next week it is back to the League competitions with Hahndorf travelling away to Adelaide University. The Div 4 Cs are away to Dragon Rangers and the Div 5 Cs are also visitors to the Vipers.

Round 13: Hahndorf V McLaren District

Hahndorf Magpies V McLaren District

The Hahndorf Magpies returned to the top of the 3rd division of the SA Amateur Soccer League with a comprehensive 6-0 win over McLaren District on Saturday, all the goals arriving in a stunning first half.

With the Reserves fixture forfeited by the visitors, the senior match started a little early and it was the Magpies who responded best by taking the lead shortly after kick off. Playing Leo Santangelo and Tom Holland in tandem up front, it was the former who made the first impression. Creating space just outside the penalty area, Sanangelo fired in at goal and the ball was parried by the McLaren custodian. Undeterred, Santangelo retrived the rebound and picked his corner with precision to get Hahndorf off the mark, lashing in the goal with his left foot.

Hahndorf’s midfield was in sparkling form from the outset, Chris Sawers, Jack Farrimond, Aaron Noble and Dan Hermel brightening the overcast day with their neat passing and clever running. They were supported by a strong defence containing Jon Lynn, Steve Noble, Matt Norris and Scott Taylor, the foursome forming a solid wall in front of goalkeeper Luke Guest.

Hahndorf maintained their dominant start to the match with the second goal within ten minutes, a corner giving Holland the chance on goal but the ‘keeper blocked the strike before Norris buried the loose ball into the net.

The McLaren District side struggled to contain the rampant Magpies, with home team threatening to score with every attack. Hahndorf built a foundation from the midfield, Sawers and Hermel using the width to stretch the visitors while A. Noble and Farrimond controlled the middle.

Farrimond started the move that earned Hahndorf their third goal, a piercing pass from deep dividing the defence and finding Sawers. The flighty winger raced into the penalty box and cut a pass back to Holland and the assured striker skilfully slotted the ball into the corner of the net.

With ten minutes remaining in the half, Hahndorf struck a rich vein of goals, a succession of scores putting the match beyond McLaren District. Taylor started the rout with a fine ball to find Farrimond on the edge of the area. The industrious midfielder slid the ball to Hermel and he made no mistake from fifteen metres, his right footed strike giving the ‘keeper no chance.

Barely a minute had passed when Hahndorf hit their fifth, Lynn’s pass slicing open the District defence with surgical precision and setting Sawers in on goal. Sawers used his speed and control to skip past the goalkeeper before tucking the ball in the net.

The spree continued with the third goal in three minutes when Santangelo put in his second and Hahndorf’s sixth when he drilled an unstoppable shot past the beleaguered District goalkeeper from a forty-five degree angle. It was a stunning conclusion to the half and gave some warmth to the hardy Magpie supporters who braved the frosty, inclement weather.

The second half saw a better display from McLaren District as Hahndorf struggled to reach the heights of earlier. Play was punctuated by a few sharp cloudbursts that drenched the playing surface and caused the ball to skip through on the players.

Holland had a chance to add to the score when two defenders left a through ball for each other, giving the forward a quick break at goal, but his shot passed wide of the mark. Hahndorf continued to press for more goals but despite some exquisite passing and interplay, they failed to find the net, a mixture of desperate defending and errant shooting denying the hosts.

The Magpies were deprived of a score when Sanangelo struck a scintillating volley from the edge of the area that rocketed into the goal, a mystifying offside call robbing Hahndorf of the potential goal of the season.

Substitutes Kayne Stubing, Jordan Webber and Matt Medley made an appearance during the final twenty minutes, helping to carry the Magpies forward as they searched for more goals. Webber had the best opportunity, bursting clear of his marker, the dynamic forward closed in on goal but his tame shot was little reward for the sharp move.

Webber supplied Stubing with a headed chance but the shot failed to find the target, gliding just over the bar as Hahndorf pinned McLaren District in their penalty area for much of the half. The visitors put the Hahndorf defence under pressure with some determined play but they were unable to make the most of it, hitting the side netting from close in.

Hahndorf closed out the match still looking to add to the score but found the visitors in a more resilient mood and had to settle for the first half score line by the time the referee blew the final whistle. Man of the Match for Hahndorf was Tom Holland, a goal complimenting his deft touch and searching passes during his outstanding game.

Super Cs

The Division 4 Cs travelled to Strathalbyn and put up a strong showing before ultimately conceding the match, 3-1.

In Division 5, an exciting match was decided in the final two minutes when an own goal gave the Magpies a 3-2 win over St Peters. The visitors took the lead, somewhat against the run of play, before Sam Wood equalised with a quality strike from just outside the penalty area. Hahndorf moved ahead when Jordi Kane’s well taken free found Wood and he again converted his chance well.

In the second half, St Peters hit back after beating the offside trap to restore parity in the match before Hahndorf secured the win with minutes to spare, the St Peters player unfortunate to turn Jesse Konstantinoff’s cross into his own net.

Next week the Reserves are contesting the quarter finals of the cup, looking to extend their run when they visit Salisbury Inter on Sunday. On Saturday, the Div 4 Cs takes on Old Ignatians down at Glenunga.

Round 12: Flinders Uni V Hahndorf

Flinders University V Hahndorf Magpies

The Hahndorf Magpies ventured to Flinders University looking to maintain their league leading status but an in-form home goalkeeper and some errant finishing kept the combatants locked at one all by the final whistle.

In the sparkling winter sunshine, Hahndorf set out to use the spaces of the wide pitch, employing a four-man midfield of Chris Sawers, Aaron Noble, Jack Farrimond and Dan Hermel behind spearheads Tom Holland and Leo Santangelo.

The Magpies made their intentions clear with a few marauding attacks into Flinders territory with Holland and Santangelo trying some speculative shots early on. The Magpies were also alert in defence, Steve Noble, Matt Norris, Scott Taylor and Jon Lynn keeping Uni away from testing the reflexes of goalkeeper Mark McGrath.

As the game developed, Uni began to impose themselves on the match with the midfield up for contest, each team having periods of domination and finding their range in front of goal. Flinders had a good chance with a header but McGrath was comfortably in position to prevent the score. Hahndorf responded through Hermel, a nice passage of play resulting in a fine cross from A. Noble who found Hermel’s head but the Uni ‘keeper was on hand to make the save.

Play continued to ebb and flow between the teams before a telling piece of University possession gave them the lead, a centring ball not cleared by Hahndorf and it fell to the University striker and he thumped it in from four metres.

Hahndorf answered the challenge with a series of piercing attacks, Holland and Santangelo with two very good chances that should have given the Magpies the equaliser but they found the home custodian in good form. The visitors kept up the pressure with Hermel the next to try but he shot over the bar from a good position.

A corner to Hahndorf nearly provided the breakthrough but Norris’ powerful header skimmed the crossbar, a scant reward for his good positioning and salmon-like leap. The University side attempted to stem the waves of attack, but the resurgent Hahndorf defence gave little away and the rarely gave Flinders a sight of goal.
A deep free kick from Taylor picked out Hermel and he headed to Holland who struck a powerful shot at goal. The shot looked to give Hahndorf the equaliser but a tremendous diving save denied the visitors a deserved goal. A.Noble showcased his fleet footed skills, eluding two Flinders players in a tight space before a third scythed him down, the cynical challenge earning a yellow card as the midfield intensity peaked before half time.

After the break, Hahndorf reassessed their position and sought to make their opportunities count, finding an equaliser within ten minutes of the restart. A good build up by the Magpies culminated in Santangelo lifting his shot over the diving ‘keeper, the sharpshooter put in close to goal by Holland’s clever pass from the edge of the area.

The visitors almost went ahead soon after when Sawers set up A.Noble with a well struck volley, but desperate defending saw the goal-bound effort deflected for a corner. Flinders University responded to the threat by contesting harder through in the midfield, but they were unable to mount any genuine attack on the Hahndorf goal.

The home side remained in the match largely through the excellent form of their ‘keeper, who was having an outstanding game and denied the Magpies on numerous occasions as Hahndorf pressed for the winning goal. Santangelo had a promising strike brilliantly saved after being put into a great position by A.Noble. Sawers set up Farrimond and he too was denied by desperate defending as the Magpies lay siege to the Flinders goal.

Jordan Webber and Kayne Stubing were brought on for a fresh attacking approach as the match drew on, Hahndorf seeking a way past the uncanny ‘keeper. Webber almost prised the University side open, his cross diverted behind the ‘keeper but as the Flinders’ custodian and Santangelo raced to the loose ball, the latter could only find the side netting from a narrow angle.

Hahndorf brought on Luke Guest on in the final minutes as the pressure mounted on the hosts but in the end time was the enemy as the referee signalled the end of the entertaining match. Man of the match was Aaron Noble, the youngster putting in an outstanding effort all game.

Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves moved within four points of the top with a tenacious 3-1 win over league leaders Flinders University.

As could be expected from the two top teams, the match got off to a fairly even opening with both sides using the generous width on offer to create chances. Hahndorf began with Nathaniel Brooke in goal, behind a defensive unit of Luke Guest, Matt Medley, Andy Craig and Rupert ‘the enforcer’ Lindon. Mike Lewington anchored the versatile midfield of Max Gordon-Edwards, David Grant, Kyle Eglinton and Alex Chapman with Jordan Webber the focal point in attack.

The thrust and parry of the early action saw both teams keen to make their mark on the match with perhaps the hosts creating the better opportunities. However as the match developed Hahndorf began to make their passing game come to the fore with Eglinton and Gordon-Edwards exploiting the flanks. Webber proved to be a handful up front and midway through the half the Magpies drew first blood with a clinical strike from the marksman after fine work from Gordon-Edwards found Webber in good position.

The lead did not last long however with the University hitting back within five minutes, a well hit shot from distance finding the corner of goal. With parity restored, the intensity of the match lifted with possession being highly contested. Challenges were robust, with neither team giving ground. Hahndorf suffered a blow when Brooke was forced to leave the field after making an outstanding save, the big ‘keeper suffering a head injury as his momentum carried him into the opposing player.

Hahndorf rearranged their team with Ash Parr brought on and the versatile Guest donning the gloves for the Magpies and making several good saves in the half. Further chances fell to the Magpies but they were unable to make them count as the half drew to an end.
Upon resumption of play, the visitors took the game up to Flinders University. Chapman, Grant and Lewington battled hard to give Hahndorf the upper hand in midfield while Webber and Gordon-Edwards continued to cause consternation for the Flinders defence. Craig, Parr, Medley and Lindon tightened their defensive duties and gave their opponents few chances. Jesse Konstantinoff was brought on with thirty minutes remaining as the Magpies went searching for goals.
A period of Hahndorf pressure eventually brought reward, a Grant corner causing panic in the University area and Konstantinoff poked the ball towards goal before a Flinders player edged it past his ‘keeper. The home side tried to respond but Guest was rarely tested with Hahndorf’s defence determined to deny Flinders any shot at an equaliser.

Hahndorf sealed the result ten minutes from time with a controversial third goal. With the Flinders ‘keeper strangely deserting his goal to chase a ball out to the side line, the referee called play on with the custodian some distance from home. Hahndorf took a throw to Webber and he slotted the ball home with the Flinders ‘keeper struggling to return to goal. The Flinders’ players were incensed by the goal but the referee stood by his decision.

The remaining minutes saw Flinders mount some ineffective attacks and Hahndorf maintained a strong defence to see out the match, the win just reward for an outstanding team effort with all players performing well. Best on the day was Jordon Webber, the rambunctious forward a constant threat with Luke Guest also having a fine game, his versatility underlined by his appearance in the First team and he also put in seventy minutes for the Cs on the neighbouring pitch. Max Gordon-Edwards rounded out the votes with a fine game in midfield.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs narrowly went down to Flinders University, a 4-3 score ensuring plenty of action with Angus Hambrook, Paul Below and Dan Proom all producing fine goals. The Div 5 Cs were defeated by BOSA 2-0 in a close affair, the odd goal in each half separating the teams.
Next week Hahndorf are home at Pine Avenue to McLaren District with the Div 5 Cs kicking off proceedings at 11am when they host St Peters. The Div 4 Cs are playing Strathalbyn at the Mylor ground for the 3pm start.

Round 11: Hahndorf Magpies V Adelaide Monarchs

Hahndorf V Adelaide Monarchs

The Hahndorf Magpies returned to the top of the 3rd Division of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League with a hard fought 2-1 win over the Adelaide Monarchs.

The top of the table clash started well for the home team, the Hahndorf midfield of Dan Hermel, Jack Farrimond, Chris Sawers and Aaron Noble looking to get forwards Leo Santangelo and Tom Holland into goal scoring positions. Mark McGrath presided over defenders Jon Lynn, Scott Taylor, Matt Norris and Steve Noble as the Magpies took the early initiative with their probing play, a contrast to the Monarchs tentative approach.

Hahndorf’s bold advances were causing problems for the visitors and they found themselves a goal to the good within the first fifteen minutes. Sawers split open the Monarchs with a superb pass to Santangelo, the inch-perfect ball finding the forward between the two central defenders. Santangelo dummied left and then cut inside before unleashing a drive that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

The Monarchs responded well after the home team took the lead, the visitors forced to lift their game with the Magpies dominating the first twenty minutes. The midfield was a fitting battlefield for the two top placed teams in the league, both sides utilising a passing and possession game with the defences matching up well.

A period of Monarchs play was capped off with the equaliser, a good move on the flank resulted in a cross that was headed into the Hahndorf goal with ten minutes left in the half. Hahndorf wrested back possession and almost retook the lead when presented with a free kick 25 yards from goal. A. Noble struck the ball well and it dipped toward goal before the Monarch’s ‘keeper leapt across to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Resuming from the break, Holland nearly got the Magpies off to the perfect start when he intercepted a headed back-pass but the possession took him wide and the Monarchs were able to regroup before his pass could find a team mate. Sawers and A.Noble were a constant threat to the visitors and often sent Hahndorf into attack, while Hermel had a chance with a header but found the ‘keeper in good position.

In defence the Magpies looked comfortable, Taylor having a fine game with good support from Norris, S.Noble and Lynn. However, the Monarchs were having some quality possession in midfield but ultimately the Magpies were equal to the threat with the match played mainly in the seething cauldron of the midfield.

The battle became a little too heated for one Monarchs player and he was given an early bath after a crude challenge earned a second yellow card. It wasn’t long before Hahndorf took advantage of their numerical superiority, a quick break on the flank finding Hermel and he lifted the ball neatly over the advancing ‘keeper for the 2-1 lead.

Hahndorf continued to mount an attack but despite the best intentions of Santangelo they were unable to add to the score. The Monarchs adjusted to their loss and began to fight hard as both teams showed some fine passing moves. However, Hahndorf was creating the better chances with the Magpies defence forming a solid barrier to goal.

Hahndorf made a couple of substitutions, bringing on Luke Guest and Jordan Webber as the match entered the final fifteen minutes. The Monarchs remained defiant and nearly scored an equaliser, the ball bouncing around Hahndorf’s penalty area as players scrambled to get a telling touch before the danger was cleared. Minutes later McGrath made a fine save from a drilled long shot that almost caught the hosts out.

Hahndorf could have halted the Monarchs resurgence through Santangelo, the hard working forward latching onto A.Noble’s cross but his shot was saved by the ‘keeper. Santangelo had a further opportunity with the final attack of the match, a dazzling solo run resulting in a sharp effort that passed just wide of goal.

The win restored Hahndorf’s position at the top of the table, just reward for a solid team effort. Man of the Match went to the superb defending of Scott Taylor, with Leo Santangelo and Matt Norris also amongst the points.

Reserves

The Hahndorf Reserves suffered their second loss of the season when profligate finishing cost them dearly as they went down 2-4 to Adelaide Monarchs.

The Magpies got off to a tardy start with the team taking a while to settle into the match. Nathaniel Brooke started in goal with Matt Medley, Luke Guest and Andy Craig taking the defensive duties and they were under pressure early with the Monarchs looking to get on the score board quickly.
Hahndorf ‘s midfield of Kyle Eglinton, Rupert Lindon, Mike Lewington, Max Gordon-Edwards and Alex Chapman began to make their passing count and drew forwards Jesse Konstantinoff and Jordan Webber into play.

Both teams created opportunities with Hahndorf perhaps having the better chances but neither were able to force a goal home. The play developed with Hahndorf starting to put a few attacks through Gordon-Edwards and Webber but they found the Monarchs ‘keeper in good form.

After twenty-five minutes the Monarchs took the lead through a converted penalty, the Monarchs’ forward bundled over in a robust challenge. The goal strengthened the Magpies resolve and they hit back within ten minutes after a corner by Chapman found its way to Gordon-Edwards. The young midfielder ran in an arc on the edge of the penalty area before finding a gap and firing in a brilliant finish to restore parity on the scoresheet.

The battle continued with Hahndorf playing better but unable to add to the score. Both teams’ ‘keepers were kept busy and in fine form, Brooke making several good saves at the feet of the opposition and his opposite number deflecting the Magpies efforts.
The Monarchs relied on getting a quick break and just before half time they unlocked the offside trap to race through on goal and tucked away the goal. It was a frustrating end of the half for the Magpies who should have made their better possession count.

In the second stanza Hahndorf changed their formation a little and maintained their attacking focus. Gordon-Edwards, Chapman, Webber and Eglinton made many forays into Monarchs territory but the Magpies wasted their chances in front of goal, several times the ball rolling across the face of goal, centimetres out but with no-one on hand to poke the ball home.
Hahndorf’s squandered chances were to hurt them when the Monarchs added a third goal, a quick break resulting in a good chip over the stranded Brooke. Hahndorf remained committed to their game plan and continued to create openings but failed to find the net. Their perseverance was eventually rewarded twenty minutes from time when persistence from Webber forced panic in the Monarchs defence and he pounced on the loose ball to fire it into the net.

At 3-2, the Magpies were right back in the match and piled on the pressure, Guest grazing the post with a well struck shot and Konstantinoff unable to keep his volley down from a good position. Hahndorf brought on Kieran Guest and Ben “Beninho” Wells to add impetus to their charge but repeatedly were denied by poor shooting or the good saves by the Monarchs ‘keeper.

The Magpies commitment forward took its toll minutes from time when a break by the Monarchs was illegally halted on the edge on the area. A well placed free kick gave the Monarchs their fourth and effectively killed off Hahndorf’s challenge.

Best on the day was Jordan Webber, who contested pugnaciously throughout the match, with good support from Max Gordon-Edwards and Luke Guest also getting the votes.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs scored a 2-0 win courtesy of a forfeit by Hazara. The Div 5 Cs battled hard against The Cove, before a single goal to the league leaders separated the teams at the end. It was a valiant effort by the young Magpies who had conceded six goals to the same team last week.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies are visiting Flinders University along with the Div 4 Cs, while the Div 5 Cs are away to BOSA.

Cup Round 3: Adelaide Asteras V Hahndorf Magpies

Adelaide Asteras V Hahndorf Magpies

The Hahndorf Reserves travelled to Flinders Park to take on Adelaide Asteras in the 3rd round of the Reserve cup, a slew of second half goals putting the Magpies into the quarter finals with a convincing 6-3 win.

Hahndorf kicked off into the wind in the opening stanza with forwards Jesse Konstantinoff and Leo Santangelo immediately on the attack with good support from Dan Hermel and Tom Holland. Fellow midfielders Chris Sawers and Ben "Beninho” Wells opened up the right flank as the Magpies enjoyed a positive start, testing the Asteras defence from the outset.

The host side soon showed their game plan, their goalkeeper repeatedly hoisting the ball deep into Hahndorf’s half on the small and extremely bumpy pitch. Hahndorf’s defenders, Kieran Guest, Mike Lewington, Andy Craig and consummate sweeper Bob Gordon-Edwards were equal to the task and gave the Asteras forwards few chances on Mark McGrath’s goal.

The Magpies concentrated on breaking down the home teams resolve and several times went close, Konstantinoff having the best chance with a header just over the bar after a fine corner from Holland. Santangelo, Hermel and Holland all had good opportunities but Hahndorf could not find the decisive strike.

Asteras’ direct approach almost brought the first goal but the post came to the Magpies’ rescue after the home forward managed to get hold a long ball and shot from 20 metres. Hahhndorf regrouped and hit back with a series of attacks, eventually getting a goal through Sawers’ courageous efforts, nipping in and winning a fifty-fifty ball from the ‘keeper and bundling it into goal. The Magpies applied further pressure to the Asteras goal but could not add to Sawers’ strike before the referee signalled the end of the half.

The second half burst back into life soon after the restart, Holland and Hermel combining before the latter sent a searching cross to the far post where Sawers was on hand to head in his, and Hahndorf’s, second goal. Maintaining an attacking drive the Magpies looked for more goals through Hermel, Santangelo and Konstantinoff, exploiting Asteras’ lack of pace and combining well with Holland and Sawers

The Magpies kept up the pressure through their midfield, using all of the meagre width on offer to get behind the Asteras defence. Wells sent Sawers a fine pass out wide and the speedy midfielder swept past the full back and drew towards goal before centring for Konstantinoff. The Magpie forward pounced on the ball and found the net with the ‘keeper well out of position.

At 3-0 up, Hahndorf stayed in control of the match, pushing forward and holding Asteras to few opportunities. Gordon-Edwards, Guest, Craig and Lewington reduced the hosts to long shots that passed high or wide with none giving Mcgrath any real threat. However, to their credit Asteras persisted and pulled a goal back. A determined run by an Asteras forward resulted in a shot at goal, the angled ball deceiving McGrath before finding the net.

The Magpies answered the challenge almost immediately with goal of the day. Guest gained possession just on halfway and sent a searing shot across the park, catching out the Asteras ‘keeper to arrow the ball into the top far corner of goal. Despite an element of luck, it was a stunning 40-metre strike to restore the Magpies three-goal buffer.

Asteras continued to battle and put in their second score with about 20 minutes remaining, the goal raising hopes of a comeback by the home side. But Hahndorf had other ideas and after bringing on Stuart Thomas, the Magpies played their way into the forward line with some neat exchanges. The ball fell to Holland and with a deft move he created an opening to slot the goal in past the ‘keeper to make the score 5-2.

Again Asteras responded to the Magpies three goal lead with a goal of their own, McGrath unable to hold a difficult shot and the Asteras player putting in the rebound. Hahndorf steadied themselves and opened the play down the flank with Holland, Santangelo and Hermel, playing some nice triangles. With minutes remaining, Hahndorf’s measured approach released Santangelo and he found space on the edge of the area to slot in the final goal past the Asteras defence.

The 6-3 result sees the Magpies advance to the quarterfinals of the Cup, the win just reward for a great team effort with all players putting in valuable contributions throughout the match.

Super Cs
The Div 5 Cs took on league leaders Cove in Saturday’s fixture, the Magpies putting in a good effort but eventually conceding 6-1 in a somewhat flattering score for the home side. Max Gordon-Edwards scored a stunning goal for the Hahndorf team and the Magpies also had another goal disallowed in an encouraging outing by the young side.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies host the Adelaide Monarchs at the Pine Avenue Arena with the early kick off seeing the Div 5 Cs meeting the Cove in consecutive weeks due to a strange twist of the fixtures. The Div 4 Cs are hosting Hazara at Mylor Oval for the 3pm kickoff.

Round 10: ACU Falcons V Hahndorf

ACU Falcons V Hahndorf
For the 10th round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division, Hahndorf travelled down to the Falcons ground and fought out an entertaining draw, both teams failing to capitalise on the many chances they created.

The Magpies and Falcons began in brisk fashion, each searching for a quick goal before the game settled. Hahndorf started Mark McGrath in goal with Jon Lynn, Matt Norris, Scott Taylor and Luke Guest providing defensive cover. The experienced foursome negated the opening salvos from the Falcons, using the width to bring the midfield into play.

Dan and Tom Holland joined Jack Farrimond and Steve Noble to give Hahndorf its midfield drive and work the ball to forwards Dan Hermel and Leo Santangelo. As both teams tested the defences of their opponents, it was the Falcons who had the first good opportunity after twenty minutes.

The Falcons held the ball in the penalty area after a corner and it was eventually smashed at goal, but unfortunately for the hosts, McGrath was in good position able to deflect the point blank shot. McGrath was called into action again soon after as the Falcons almost broke through, the Magpie ‘keeper making a sharp save with his foot and then diving to cover a second shot as it just passed wide of the post.

Hahndorf gained their first clear effort on goal through Hermel, the striker chesting down a cross in the area before hitting his shot at the Falcons’ goalkeeper. Santangelo set Hermel up with a second chance after skipping past his marker but the well-struck shot went wide.

The Falcons were more than holding their own and arguably had created the better chances during the first half. The Hahndorf defence remained vigilant and often found an outlet through Taylor, the left-sided player turning defence into attack with some fine interceptions and incisive passing. Farrimond and Noble were industrious in the middle, running the midfield engine room with their closing down and distribution.
Hahndorf should have opened the scoring just before the end of the half after some good play set up T.Holland with a great chance, but he uncharacteristically dragged his shot just wide of the goal.

The ACU Falcons almost got off to a great start in the second term and really should have scored, a shot cannoning off the underside of the crossbar before McGrath recovered the loose ball. The Magpies answered with Guest getting into as good position to centre to Hermel but his header went wide of the mark.

The match started to open up as both teams used to wide pitch to advantage, the large spaces encouraging expansive play at both ends but neither side were able to make it count. With 30 minutes remaining, Hahndorf brought on Chris Sawers as the open play continued.

Sawers worked his way into the game and went close with a sharp effort but the Falcon ‘keeper made a good save. The Falcons responded with a fine shot, McGrath managing to keep the score blank with a great tip over the bar. D.Holland regained possession for the Magpies and put Santangelo in on goal and his shot was blocked.

Hahndorf increased the tempo and maintained their attack through Hermel, the flighty striker sailing down the flank and putting in a great cross to Sawers at the back post. Sawers met the ball well but his header was somehow kept out by the Falcons’’keeper with a desperate save. Hermel then went himself; driving in from the wing he drew the Falcons’ defenders and with the angle narrowing, hit the side netting.

Hahndorf kept up the pressure with D.Holland going close with two successive free kicks just out from the penalty area. More desperate defending by the Falcons blocked Santangelo’s shot after he was set up a by a neat back heel from Sawers.

The Falcons relieved the pressure with a good chance of their own before Hahndorf set up camp in the Falcons half of the pitch in the final ten minutes. The Magpies continued to create openings but could not find the back of the net, Santangelo, Hermel and D.Holland all having their shots denied. With the time ebbing away, the Magpies threw Norris forward but still a score eluded Hahndorf, Hermel having the final chance but finding the Falcons’ ‘keeper a firm obstacle till the end.

Best on the day was Mark McGrath with some excellent glove work to keep a clean sheet. Good support came from Jack Farrimond and Steve Noble, pair carrying much of the heavy work of the midfield cauldron.

Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves responded with composure to a lucky strike by the Falcons to completely dominate the second half and triumph 6-1 by the final whistle.

Starting with Nathaniel Brooke in goal, the Magpies fielded Sam Heyward up front with Jordan Webber and the two put the Falcons on the defensive from the outset. Hahndorf’s midfield of Kyle Eglinton, David Grant, Chris Sawers and Max Gordon-Edwards used the wide pitch to stretch the Falcons. The host side made a few early forays forward but met strong resistance in the form of Matt Medley, Andy Craig, Michael Lewington and Rupert “the Enforcer” Lindon.

Hahndorf dominated possession but found their shooting wayward, repeatedly getting in good positions but unable to find the clinical strike. The Falcons seemed willing to retreat to the edge of the penalty area and defend in numbers and look for a counter attack.

After a fruitless twenty minutes of attacking pressure, the Magpies went behind when the Falcons scored against the run of play. A quick break down the flank gave the Falcon winger the opportunity to cross and the ball sailed unerringly to the back post to the joy of the hosts.

Hahndorf answered with more possession, Eglinton and Sawers making the most of the space out wide to keep the Falcon defence under stress. Grant made a good run into the box and had a penalty claim denied as the Magpies continued their errant shooting. The relentless attack eventually paid dividends five minutes from the break when Sawers gathered the ball well and neatly evaded a defender to rifle a true strike into the corner of the net.

Resuming the second half with the same attacking intent, Hahndorf added their second soon after the restart. Gordon-Edwards finding Sawers with an accurate pass and the marksman repeated his earlier shot to give Hahndorf the lead. The Magpies continued to build from the back, Lewington and Lindon winning the Falcon through balls, the latter instrumental in pushing the Magpies into attacking positions.

Hahndorf went further ahead through Webber, latching on to a piercing pass from deep by Sawers, the bustling forward stepped around the onrushing ‘keeper to tuck away a fine goal. With the Magpies in control of the match, they increased the pressure by bringing on Alex Chapman, Jesse Konstantinoff and Luke Jones and the trio immediately got into the match.

Gordon-Edwards put his name on the score sheet with a searching run from wide to open up the goal a fire a shot to the near post and elude the Falcons’ custodian. Further insult was added to the hosts when the Falcons put in an own goal. A quick corner by the Magpies caught out the Falcons and Chapmans centring ball was turned into the top corner of goal net by one of their own.

Chapman and Gordon-Edwards were tormenting the defence on the flank, their interplay and passing opening the play and creating opportunities and it was Gordon-Edwards who rounded out the scoring with a fine drive from the edge of the area for a final score of 6-1.

In a convincing display, best on the day was Rupert Lindon, who won plenty of the ball and was precise with his distribution. Also catching the votes were Max Gordon-Edwards and Chris Sawers, both contributing a brace of goals and dominating much of the midfield play.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs stunned Brahma Lodge with a 2-1 win to pick up their first points of the season, a richly deserved result for the team in a tough division. The Div 5 Cs fought out a scoreless draw against Salisbury Villa, despite the Magpies monopolising possession, they were unable to convert any of their chances.

Next week the Hahndorf Reserves visit Adelaide Asteras for a Sunday match in the 3rd round of the cup. The Div 4 Super Cs are in action against the Cove on Saturday at Hallett Cove for a 11.30 kick off.

Round 9: Hahndorf V Murray Bridge

Hahndorf V Murray Bridge

The Hahndorf Magpies fired in a flurry of goals to account for Murray Bridge 5-1 in the 9th round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division.
Hahndorf got off to a sparkling start against Murray Bridge, the skilful midfield of Aaron Noble, Jack Farrimond with Dan and Tom Holland tore into the match and set strikers Kayne Stubing and Dan Hermel up with early opportunities.

It wasn’t long before Hahndorf made the opening goal from a corner, the ball finding Hermel on the back post and his fierce shot was tipped onto the post, the ball rebounded to D.Holland who had his low shot blocked. The ball fell back to Hermel and he made no mistake the second time, arrowing his drive to the corner of the net.

The Magpies continued to attack with Farrimond striking a piledriver that was palmed away and Stubing’s rebound shot was also blocked. However it was not long before the score was doubled, A. Noble with an exquisite piece of skill to deftly beat two players and curl the ball past the Bridge ‘keeper.

The Hahndorf defence gave the visitors little, Matt Norris, Steve Noble, Scott Taylor and Jon Lynn providing a stable base in front of stand in ‘keeper, the versatile Luke Guest. Hahndorf broke through for a third score when the Holland brothers combined, Tom sliding a through ball for Dan to run in and slot the goal away.

A relentless Magpie team made it 4-0 in twenty minutes when a quick free kick by A.Noble found Hermel and he buried the shot past a shell-shocked Murray Bridge. With the Magpies dominating in midfield, the defence were in a miserly mood, Lynn using his experience to snuff out the forward movement by the visitors and send the Magpies into attack.

Murray Bridge managed to work their way into the match but wasted a good opportunity by shooting wide. The lull in scoring was arrested ten minutes from half time when T.Holland scored a cheeky goal from distance, the low drive bouncing just in front of the ’keeper and skipping under his searching dive.

The half saw some delightful play from the hosts, a number of intricate passes and movement off the ball leaving Murray Bridge chasing shadows as the Magpies dominated the play. Hahndorf suffered their only blemish when they had a player sent off for an early shower just before half time.

Resuming the second half a player down, the Magpies encountered a more resolute Murray Bridge side and the match became a more even affair. Guest saw his first real action, tipping a shot onto the bar before collecting the rebound as Norris led the defence strongly at the back. Lynn was in sparkling form, reading Murray Bridge’s attacking intent and was well supported by Taylor, Norris, Farrimond and S.Noble.

Hahndorf continued to attack and D. Holland hit a good free kick just wide while Hermel squandered another good chance. The visitors worked hard to create an opportunity and finally scored with a good through ball to leave Guest exposed and Murray Bridge pulled a goal back.

Substitutes Jesse Konstantinoff, Chris Sawers and Matt Medley made their appearance in the final 25 minutes, with Hahndorf continuing to press for more goals. Hermel hit the post with a free kick and the home side had a goal disallowed for off side after a series of shots were blocked or hit the bar. Konstantinoff and Sawers almost made it onto the scoresheet but were unable to convert their chances before the final whistle.

The strong win continues Hahndorf’s title challenge, with Dan Hermel gathering the best-on-ground votes with Jon Lynn and Tom Holland also producing some scintillating play.

Reserves

Hahndorf Reserves dug deep and rallied twice before eventually overcoming a stubborn Murray Bridge outfit 3-2 to keep their title hopes alive.

The match got off to an even start with Hahndorf strikers Jesse Konstantinoff and Jordan Webber kicking off up the slope of the Pine Avenue ground. Neither side made much of an impression on their opposition defence with the midfield containing the early action. Max Gordon-Edwards, Colin Hibbert, David Grant and Chris Sawers battled hard but the Hahndorf team struggled to maintain possession against the competitive Murray Bridge side.

Bob Gordon-Edwards marshalled defenders Kyle Eglinton, Rupert “the Enforcer” Lindon and Matt Medley to repel some attacking moves by the visitors and James Nicholson’s goal was not seriously challenged. M. Gordon-Edwards exploited space on the flank and the Magpies created a few good chances, Webber hitting the side netting and Grant finding the Bridge ‘keeper with a sharp effort.

However, the home team was stung by the visitors when they scored, the ball cut back from the by-line to find the Murray Bridge player with plenty of the goal to aim at. Hahndorf hit back through Hibbert, but the bustling midfielder went wide with his shot.

Hahndorf continued to press and found the equaliser through Sawers. Getting a fine pass from Webber, Sawers made a brilliant turn in the penalty area to open up space and he drilled the shot into goal.

Hahndorf almost took the lead soon after when Grant had his free kick tipped over the bar after evading the defensive wall. But it was the visitors who regained the lead after profiting from a moment of hesitation by Hahndorf, a long ball bouncing into the penalty area and Murray Bridge heading over the advancing Nicholson. The Magpies tried to respond but found it difficult to get their passing game going before the end of the half.

The second half saw an improved performance by the hosts and they began to make better use of the flanks, Sawers particularly prolific with some dazzling runs. Hahndorf gained a couple of corners and made one of them count; Hibbert playing short to Sawers and he drove in a low shot that was half cleared to Lindon who smashed it through traffic to the corner of goal.

With scores at parity, Hahndorf gained confidence and pushed up the pitch, M. Gordon-Edwards and Webber getting more of the ball. The Magpies brought on Luke Guest to shore up the backline as the hosts went looking for the next goal. Konstantinoff had a great chance for the winner but scooped his effort over from close in as Hahndorf mounted a series of attacks with Grant, Webber and Sawers all testing the Bridge ‘keeper.

A further substitution saw Sam Heyward enter the match and he made an impact shortly after. Guest burst out of defence and sent a long ball to Webber who charged at the Murray Bridge backline. Webber sent in a fierce shot that was palmed out to Heyward and the tall striker made no mistake to put Hahndorf into the 3-2 lead.

The Magpies had several chances to add further goals but wayward shooting kept the match close. Murray Bridge fought to the end and were almost gifted an equaliser when a defensive mix up gave the visitors a good chance late in the match.

Best on the day was Chris Sawers who created many chances for the Magpies with some searing runs. Others to catch the votes were Rupert Lindon having a very solid game and an equalising goal and M. Gordon-Edwards with his strong midfield efforts.

Super Cs

The Div 4 Super Cs put in a brave performance before being overrun by a well-drilled Old Ignatians side at Mylor, the visitors scoring seven unanswered goals.

The Div 5 Cs fought hard against local rivals Stirling but were unable to recover after going three goals down, the final score of 4-1 not a true reflection of the match. Hahndorf made it 3-1 through Sam Wood and dominated the last 15 minutes but could not bring back the deficit despite club stalwart Stuart Thomas hitting the woodwork twice.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies visit the ACU Falcons While the Div 4 Cs are at Brahma Lodge and the Div 5 Cs travel to Salisbury Villa.

Round 8: Hahndorf V Adelaide Pumas

Hahndorf V Adelaide Pumas

In the eighth round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division, Hahndorf put in a convincing display to win 3-0 and account for title challengers, the Adelaide Pumas.

Both teams started briskly, the Magpies fielding an experienced defensive line with Jon Lynn, Matt Norris, Steve Noble and Luke Guest in front of custodian Nathaniel Brooke.

The Pumas tested Hahndorf early but were unable to make any telling opportunities as the Magpies closed them down. Midfielders Dan Hermel, Jack Farrimond, Aaron Noble and Dan Holland battled hard to give Hahndorf possession and bring forwards Kayne Stubing and Leo Santangelo into play.

The pressure built up on the Pumas and Hahndorf found a way through with Hermel to open the scoring. The fleet-footed winger worked behind the defence and cut the ball back into goal after drawing out the ’keeper.

The midfield cauldron provided most of the action and several rash challenges drew cautions to both teams. Hahndorf pressed forward and Holland forced the goalkeeper into a save and soon after Hermel also caused consternation to the visitors with a fine effort.

Brooke too was called into action as the Pumas made a good chance, the big Magpie ‘keeper diving at full stretch to stop a shot from the edge of the area. The match saw a few more attacking moves by Hahndorf but no-one added to the score line before half time arrived.

An even first ten minutes began the second stanza before either team could manage a telling attack, Hahndorf wasting a free kick from a promising position. The midfield again provided the most interest with Farrimond and Holland particularly industrious and their endeavour helped the Magpies gain a series of corners.

Hahndorf tried with several headers at goal but the ball could not be forced over the line and finally the Pumas ‘keeper claimed the ball after a fourth attempt. A second avenue opened up through Holland and Santangelo and the latter was within centimetres of connecting with the centring pass.

The Magpie backline was holding its own and looked assured with their passing out of defence, Norris and Guest twin towers of strength in the spine. Lynn started an attack from deep, setting A Noble off down the flank and he found Santangelo with a piercing pass. The tall forward took the ball in his stride but went narrowly wide with his shot.

Tom Holland entered the match as the Magpies gained more possession, Stubing going wide after a fine pass from the substitute. T Holland was to go one better soon after, winning a fifty-fifty through ball to run in on goal before tucking it away for Hahndorf’s second score.

The score gave Hahndorf opportunity to bring on Scott Taylor and for the referee to send off a Pumas player for dissent. Hahndorf took advantage with their third strike, Stubing heading at the back post after some skilful approach play by the Magpies.

Hermel could have made it more but his turn and shot passed the wrong side of the post. With the minutes remaining dwindling, the visitors pressed for an answering goal. They could have scored but Farrimond cleared a Pumas’ header off the line and the rebound was put over the bar to preserve Hahndorf’s clean sheet.

In a fine team performance, best on the day was Leo Santangelo, the forward a constant threat in the forward half with Dan Hermel and Luke Guest also putting in excellent games.

Reserves
A persistent Hahndorf effort was rewarded with a fine 5-1 win over the Adelaide Pumas to keep the Magpies in second spot in the league.

Mark McGrath started in goal with Matt Medley, Mike Lewington, Andy Craig and Rupert “the Enforcer” Lindon providing the defensive duties. Kyle Eglinton, Dave Grant, Chris Sawers and Max Gordon-Edwards worked the midfield engine room as the match got off to a fairly even first twenty minutes.

The Magpies played their way up the ground and pushed the ball around well, Gordon-Edwards and Eglinton eager to use the space out wide. The approach brought the reward, the defence switching play along the back to release Eglinton. An accurate ball to forward Sam Heyward was controlled and he drilled it inside the near post for the opening goal.

The Pumas didn’t take the setback lying down and McGrath made a couple of fine saves before the visitors struck the equaliser. An early cross was met by the Pumas forward and he stuck it past the exposed McGrath for 1-1. Hahndorf responded well but could not find a way to goal despite having the majority of possession before half time.

Colin Hibbert entered the match after half time and the Magpies pressed forward looking for more goals. Jordan Webber was making an impact up front with his bullocking runs and his hard work was to pay off with Hahndorf’s second goal, the young striker collecting a pass from out wide and hammering a shot past the Pumas ‘keeper.

More was to come from the exciting forward when a Grant free kick found its way to the back post and Webber collected the loose ball. Turning sharply, he belted the ball to the far corner of the net from the proverbial impossible angle as Hahndorf moved further ahead.

The Magpies began to control the tempo of the match and kept the Pumas to few chances and Ben “Beninho” Wells entered the fray. Some niggle started to creep into the game and the Pumas lost a player for striking out at a Magpie and giving Hahndorf a free on the edge of the area. The home team took the opportunity to bring on John Lawler and he could have scored with his first touch, striking at goal but only finding the post from close in.

He was to make amends minutes later, scoring with his second touch, heading across goal from a well-struck corner kick. Further petulance from the visitors reduced their numbers again and Hahndorf exploited the open spaces afforded them. Several Magpie chances went begging before Gordn-Edwards struck a thunderbolt from distance that flew like a missile past the beleaguered Pumas’ ‘keeper.

Hahndorf switched off a little in the final minutes and the Pumas nearly made them pay but the Magpies regained their composure to consolidate the 5-1. Best on the day was Max Gordon-Edwards with a great performance in the midfield and a fine goal. Also with outstanding efforts were Kyle Eglinton and Jordan Webber, both causing havoc in the Pumas half.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Cs suffered some late absences and a ten man Magpie outfit were no match for the Adelaide University side, going down 7-1 at the Mylor ground.

The Div 5 Cs put in a solid performance in a tight match but were undone by a couple of defensive mix-ups, the Adelaide University taking advantage to put in two goals and cancel out a Sam Wood strike.

Next week the Hahndorf firsts and Reserves are again at their Pine Avenue home, hosting Murray Bridge while the Div 5 Cs play earlier in the day hosting local rivals Stirling. The Div 4 Cs take on Old Ignatians at Mylor in the 3pm kick off.

Cup round 2: Hahndorf V Elizabeth Grove

Hahndorf V Elizabeth Grove

The Hahndorf Reserves hosted Sunday Div 2 side Elizabeth Grove for the 2nd round of the SAASL Cup, putting in an impressive display to oust their more fancied rivals by 5 goals to 1.

The match got off to a competitive start with both sides eager to press forward and test the respective defences. Hahndorf started with Kyle Eglinton, Michael Lewington, Luke Guest and Andy Craig in front of Magpie custodian James Nicholson.

The back line was steadfast in the face of Elizabeth Grove’s intent and Hahndorf’s midfield of Chris Sawers, Dan Hermel and the brothers Holland, Tom and Dan, began to exert their influence. Jesse Konstantinoff was the focal point in attack along with Leo Santangelo, the pair keen to test Grove’s ‘keeper on the damp surface.

Lewington and Guest were formidable in central defence and did not allow Grove any easy access to goal, while Craig and Eglinton halted moves down the wings. The first twenty minutes were very competitive as both teams had glimpses of goal but accuracy was often absent, Grove had several shots pass wide of goal while Konstantinoff stabbed a good opportunity wide and Santangelo was also astray early on.

However it was the home team that were creating the better scoring opportunities, with the Magpie midfield beginning to fire. Throughout the half, several decisions brought disagreement from the visiting side and soon the referee was dealing out yellow cards for dissent like a practised croupier. Hahndorf got on with the match and were rewarded with the first goal through Konstantinoff when he slotted in Santangelo’s cross from close range.

Sawers and Hermel were prolific on the flanks and several times raced past their markers to deliver low, hard balls to the centre, pinning Grove back with their speed and endeavour. The Holland pair worked well to send Hahndorf into attack and it wasn’t long before the Magpies had doubled their score.

Santangelo lurked outside the penalty area and picked up a short clearance after a period of Hahndorf pressure. He took a couple of strides before sending a searing drive to the top corner of the net.

Elizabeth tried to hit back and should have scored but for a finger tip save by Nicholson to divert the ball past the post. The Magpie ‘keeper was also alert to the through balls and quickly made them his own.

The Magpies kept the pressure on Grove and hit a series of shots at goal before D. Holland stepped up the deliver the goods, picking up the ball and slotting across goal into the net.

Hahndorf were enjoying the match and played some neat football, with Eglinton overlapping down the flanks and the Magpies’ exploiting Grove’s lack of pace at the back through their speedy wingers. The Hahndorf defence remained vigilant and continued to keep the Elizabeth forwards to slim pickings, their best chance from a goal kick interception, but the shot was wasted wide of the mark.

The hosts capped of a fine half with the 4th goal of the game. Santangelo delivered a sterling cross for Konstantinoff and the sharpshooter controlled the ball well before swivelling and smacking it past the despairing Grove ‘keeper.

The second stanza did not carry the same intensity as the first although Hahndorf and Grove continued to battle hard for the ball. Hermel was in terrific form out wide, his marker constantly in jeopardy of twisting his neck as the flighty winger went by.

Hahndorf peppered the Grove goal through Santangelo, Konstantinoff, D and T Holland but the shots were often from distance and lacked direction as the half drew on. Grove hit back with a goal from a free kick, the ball being headed in from an acute angle at the back post.

The goal did little to enliven Grove and the expected fight back was essentially squashed by Hahndorf’s defensive line and hardworking midfield, Rupert “the Enforcer” Lindon brought on to strengthen the Magpies’ resolve.
With little time remaining, Hahndorf killed the match off with Luke Guest striking an emphatic penalty to make the final score 5-1 to the home team.

It was a great team performance by all the players but outstanding on the day was Dan Hermel, with excellent games also from Kyle Eglinton, Leo Santangelo and Dan Holland.

Div 5 Super Cs
The Div 5 Super Cs continued their climb up the ladder with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Salisbury Villa. Scott Schubert extended his fine goal scoring form with Hahndorf’s first with John Lawler also netting before half time.

Promising youngster Sam Wood put in the Magpies’ third and Lawler scored his second and Hahndorf’s fourth to put the result beyond doubt. Coach Edmondo Palombo was delighted with the effort of all his charges, singling out Tim Staniford as best on the day.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies host the Adelaide Pumas at the Pine Avenue arena while the Div 5 Cs kick-off earlier in the day at home against Adelaide University. The Div 4 Cs also play Adelaide University, but at Mylor for their 3pm kick-off.

Round 7: USC Lion V Hahndorf

Lion mauls Magpies

USC Lion V Hahndorf

Hahndorf suffered their first defeat of the season following a disappointing second half display, conceding 6 goals to nil against an organised and well-drilled USC Lion side for the 7th round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division.

Playing into a stiff breeze, the Magpies fielded a team with Nathaniel Brooke in goal behind a defensive line of Steve Noble, Jon Lynn, Luke Guest and Scott Taylor. The opening ten minutes saw Hahndorf make most of the possession through midfielders Aaron Noble, Leo Santangelo, Jack Farrimond and Dan Holland, linking up with front men Kayne Stubing and Matt Norris.

Despite their early forays forward, Hahndorf could not produce a clear chance on goal and it was USC Lion who broke through, almost against the run of play, to put the hosts up 1-0 after fifteen minutes.

The Magpies responded through Taylor and Stubing, the fleet-footed player dashing into the penalty area and forcing the Lion ‘keeper to beat the shot away. Guest rose to meet the resultant corner kick but could not find the target with his head.

Norris, A.Noble and Farrimond combined to send Santangelo through with a well-weighted pass but the home goalkeeper was up to the task and held Santangelo’s fierce drive. Hahndorf tried again through Stubing, a solo run eluding most but the finish was not as precise and again the Lion ‘keeper was to deny the Magpies.

Lion were beginning to warm to the match and Hahndorf could have been two goals down but for a great save by Brooke, repelling a rasping drive from the home striker. The battle for the midfield was fierce, neither team given much time on the ball but the Magpies failed to capitalise on their pressure during the half. A good build up presented Norris with a chance but the Lion custodian palmed away his effort to leave Hahndorf trailing 1-0 at half time.

The Magpies got off to a poor start in the second half when USC Lion scored their second goal soon after resumption of play, a stray disposal from Brooke returned with interest. Hahndorf almost replied through Stubing, but he stuck his shot over the bar after a fine run and cross from Holland.

Hahndorf pressed forward searching for a goal but found the Lion defence in a miserly mood and the visitors were saved when Lion found the net after a fast break, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Making his return after an injury, Tom Holland was brought on to add impetus to Hahndorf’ effort but this was thwarted by Lion’s 3rd goal, a volley to the corner leaving Brooke no chance.

Hahndorf tried to respond but could not find the breakthrough they desired, the host side determined not to let the Magpies into the match. Pressure from Lion forced their 4th goal, a strong block by Brooke was not cleared and Lion eventually bundled the ball in.

A free kick summed up Hahndorf’s day, the opportunity not finding the target to the frustration of the Hills team. Lion countered with a fast break and their 5th goal as the Magpies continued to make little impression in the attacking third.

Hahndorf persisted however and were unlucky after Norris headed wide after a great cross from D.Holland found the club stalwart in a good position. Lion ended the pain for Hahndorf with a stunning strike from distance, the volley finding the top corner to seal a comprehensive win in which Hahndorf faded during the second half and were largely outplayed.

Reserves

The Magpie Reserves played out a strong, competitive scoreless draw against the 3rd placed USC Lion to maintain second spot in their division.

The Magpies began with Kyle Eglinton, Mike Lewington, Andy Craig and Matt Medley in defence, with James Nicholson donning the gloves. A mixture of youth and experience pervaded the midfield with Max Gordon-Edwards, Chris Sawers, Colin Hibbert and David Grant looking hold the middle ground. Jordan Webber and Jesse Konstantinoff provide a focal point up front and the pair kept the opposition defenders on their guard.

The hosts put Hahndorf under pressure in the first phase of play, trying to make the most of the stiff breeze behind them. The Magpies defence worked hard to shut down their hosts with some timely tackles and defensive blocks as they worked their way into the match. Nicholson made a brilliant save early on to deny Lion a score when they broke through on goal, the custodian snatching the ball from the feet of the advancing forward.

Sawers and Gordon-Edwards found the flanks very rewarding and the Magpies had a great chance when the latter put in a fine cross for Webber to knock on to Konstantinoff, but the striker was off balance when he shot and the ball went wide.

Hahndorf began to make some telling moves forward but were frustrated by a flag-happy linesman who made a few dubious calls for offside. However there was no denying Hahndorf’s intent when Sawers struck a rasping drive from distance that cannoned off the crossbar.

The second half was as combative as the first, the defence of both teams holding sway over the forwards and leaving them with few genuine chances. Lewington and Craig won many of the aerial duels while Eglinton and Medley were sure in their tackles.

Hibbert and Grant continued to battle in the cauldron of midfield while Gordon-Edwards and Sawers found acres of space out wide. The Magpies began to tame the Lion defence and pressed for a goal, bringing on Rupert “the Enforcer” Lindon and Sam Heyward, hoping the injection of fresh legs would tip the match in the visitors favour.

Webber was denied a goal when a Lion arm deflected his volley but the Hahndorf protests held no water with the referee, as the Magpies continued to pin the hosts back in the final twenty minutes. Heyward had a good chance to win it for Hahndorf in the final minutes but could not keep his header down after another great cross from Grant.

In a disciplined display where all players played very well in a hard fought match, among the highlights were Sawers, Webber, Gordon-Edwards, Craig and Lewington.

Super Cs
The Div 4 Super Cs were unlucky in their 3-1 loss to Adelaide Redblue Eagles, equalising soon after the start of the second half but unable to prevent a couple of late goals by the home side.

The Div 5 Cs fared better in a physical encounter, getting over Modbury Jets 3-1, with a fine double strike by John Lawler putting the Magpies in a good frame. An answering goal by Modbury livened up the match before Scott Schubert sealed the win with a clinical finish.

Next week the Hahndorf Reserves host Elizabeth Grove in the Reserve cup and the Div 5 Cs also are at home to Salisbury Villa.
