Round 5: Hahndorf V Adelaide University

Hahndorf Scores with Guest Appearance

In a high quality encounter, Hahndorf triumphed 2-1 over a fast finishing Adelaide University in the 5th round of the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division.

The match got underway in sparkling sunshine, with Hahndorf on the front foot through Leo Santangelo and Dan Holland, the strikers a focal point of midfielders Alex Chapman, Jack Farrimond, Steve Noble and Kayne Stubing. Nathaniel Brooke took command between the sticks, behind a defensive line of Matt Medley, Jon Lynn, Luke Guest and Scott Taylor.

An even twenty minutes opened the game as both sides sought to exploit the opposition defence and control the midfield. However, clear chances were rare with Adelaide University’s best chance being denied by Lynn making ground to stop a shot after Brooke had been rounded.

Holland answered for the Magpies after a flowing move involving Farrimond and Santangelo, but the University ‘keeper was in good position to make the save. Hahndorf then made some useful ground, holding the ball in their attacking half and gaining several corners.

A free kick from the flank provided the opening goal for Hahndorf, Holland whipping the ball in and the University ‘keeper was unable to hold the cross. Stubing pounced on the loose ball but could not get a shot away and it fell to Guest, the mobile defender drilling it into the far corner of the goal.

The Magpies maintained their lead to half time with the help of some excellent defence from Lynn, Medley, Guest and Taylor as the visitors tried to even the score before the break.

The second half was much the same as the first, a tight tussle with both defences on giving little away. Stubing went close with a header, but it flashed past the wrong side of the back post. Adelaide then put Hahndorf under pressure, pinning the Magpies back with a series of corners, but the home team defended well under the stress.

Several times Stubing launched Hahndorf into attack, striding down the flank to deliver some fine crosses, Santangelo getting on the end of one and unlucky to see his header go over the bar. Guest also missed the target with his header, before going on a scything run to release Santangelo, who in turn found Holland, his goal-bound shot drawing an acrobatic tip over the bar from the University ‘keeper.

Eventually Hahndorf’s pressure produced the second goal, Holland delivering a deep free that was gathered by Guest out wide. Deceiving his marker, Guest unleashed a fierce drive from a sharp angle, the shot unstoppable as it speared into the top corner despite the ‘keeper getting a hand on it.

Hahndorf made several substitutions, bringing on Gilbert Ward and Chris Sawers as the Magpies looked to consolidate their lead. With the Hahndorf defence largely on top for most of the game, Lynn conspicuous with his timely interceptions, Adelaide University sparked a torrid final ten minutes when they scored.

A long ball was gathered by the visiting forward who shot, Brooke’s parry unable to keep the ball rolling toward goal and as four players converged, University were able to bundle it in. Adelaide University upped the tempo looking for an equaliser, but the Magpies responded well, the defence calm under examination.

A yellow card was given out to a University player when he theatrically fell in the penalty area, confirming calls from a spectator suggesting the offender was clearly a first year drama student with much to learn.

Hahndorf had a chance to put the game beyond reach with a slick move that left Holland with a shot after Santangelo’s lay off, but his strike went narrowly wide. Both teams were desperate for possession in the dwindling minutes but could not breech the respective defences, who held firm to the final whistle.

Best on the day for Hahndorf was Luke Guest, a double strike to the central defender underlining his versatility at both ends of the park. He was assisted by Jon Lynn, the club stalwart a rock in leading the defence with Dan Holland also putting in a sterling game all day.

Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves fought out a highly contestable scoreless draw in a match of few clear chances with both teams in fine form at the back.

Adelaide University had the early running from kick off and put the defence of Kyle Eglinton, Andy Craig, Mike Lewington and Gilbert Ward under scrutiny. Despite their intent, the University side created few chances to trouble Magpie custodian James Nicholson and the hosts started to work their way into the match.

Midfielders John Lawler, Colin Hibbert, Chris Sawers and Max Gordon-Edwards began to influence the play, although Hahndorf too had trouble creating chances through their strikers, Jesse Konstantinoff and Jordan Webber.

Both teams had periods of domination but could do little to make it count on the score board, the respective defences working hard to deny any easy chances. Several corners to Hahndorf were not capitalised on, with efforts going wide as the home team tried to prise open the University side.

The arm wrestle continued into the second half, the defence of Eglinton and Lewington crucial in keeping Adelaide University to a few, ineffective long shots. Ward and Sawers worked well to restrict the visitors, while Webber and Konstantinoff were busy in attack but could not find a way through the defence.

Rupert “the Enforcer “Lindon and Ben “Beninho” Wells entered the fray during the half with Hahndorf hoping the injection of fresh legs would generate a goal. The Magpies best chance fell to Konstantinoff, chasing a bouncing ball he lifted his shot over the advancing ‘keeper but it went just wide of goal.

Several late free kicks to the Adelaide side put Hahndorf under pressure at the back but they responded well, the defence not giving an inch in the cauldron of battle. The combatants had to settle for a share of the points with no goals scored despite the entertaining and high quality displayed by both teams.

Best on the day for Hahndorf was Kyle Eglinton for his comprehensive effort in defence, aided by big Mike Lewington who won most of his contested challenges. Gilbert Ward also put in a solid game, cutting out many University attacks and often putting Hahndorf on the counter attack.

Super Cs

In a pulsating encounter, the Hahndorf Div5 Cs trailed twice before scoring a second half winner to take the points over the visiting Vipers. After the Vipers went a goal up, Sam Wood equalised with a stunning volley from Luke Jones’ throw, the shot rocketing into the bottom corner of the net.

The Vipers once again took the lead, only for Scott Schubert to fire in the reply from the edge of the area, squeezing a scintillating shot between two players to complete an entertaining first half. An even second half turned Hahndorf’s way, with Owen “the Black Pearl” Boyce’s penalty trickling over the line after the Vipers ‘keeper almost saved the spot kick.

The Div 4 Cs were not so lucky, but put in a brave performance as the depleted eight man team went down 4-1 to the Dragon Rangers. A highlight for Hahndorf was the equalising goal at 1-1, Kieran Guest emulating his brother’s efforts with a spectacular drive from distance to find the top corner of net.

Next week, Hahndorf once again host a triple-header at the Pine avenue arena, bragging rights on the line when the First and Reserve teams contest the local derby against Mt Barker. The Div 5 Cs start the days action at 11am when they take on Sturt Marion while the Div 4 Cs host Greenock at Mylor for their 3pm kick off.

Round 4: McLaren District V Hahndorf

McLaren District V Hahndorf

Hahndorf returned to winning form in their 4th fixture of South Australian Amateur Soccer League, putting the polish on their shooting boots with a 9-0 caning of McLaren District.

Hahndorf started Nathaniel Brooke in goal behind the defensive line of Scott Taylor, Martin Busch, Jon Lynn and Matt Medley. A young, vibrant midfield featured Alex Chapman, Jack Farrimond, Leo Santangelo and Dan Holland, the foursome providing plenty of the ball to strikers Callum Graham and Kayne Stubing.

Hahndorf got off to a flying start, Graham netting the opener with less than five minutes on the clock, Stubing supplying a fine cross for the talented forward. Soon after the Magpies doubled their lead, Taylor’s incisive pass piercing the host’s defence and Stubing drilled a low shot across the goal keeper, a slight bobble helping it on its way and maintaining the sharpshooter’s goal-a-game record.

The Magpies kept up the pressure with Chapman and Holland exploiting the width on offer and it was the latter who set up Stubing’s second, a sharp chance fired into goal to leave the hosts in disarray. Continued pressure saw Holland break forward to force a good save and from the resultant corner, Taylor and Busch had both their efforts go wide of the target.

However, further corners to the Magpies paid dividends, Santangelo picking up a weak clearance and after a slick move to create space, he arrowed a drive into goal. Hahndorf piled on the misery for the hosts when Stubing scored his hat trick with a long shot and then rounded out the half with Hahndorf’s sixth. The fourth was arguably the best of Stubing’s goals, the prolific marksman made a great turn to leave two defenders guarding space and then unleashed a searing shot into the corner of goal.

Leading 6-0 at half time, the Magpies relaxed a little on the resumption of play as Mclaren District took the match to them. The hosts tried to mount a challenge but the Hahndorf defence were miserly in giving away chances and Brooke was well placed to collect any shots on the visitor’s goal. Farrimond and Santangelo worked the central corridor to nullify District’s options, while Graham and Stubing remained a potent threat.

Hahndorf brought on Luke Guest as Hahndorf looked to regain their hold and a flowing move brought Graham an opportunity but the Mclaren ‘keeper was in good position to hold the shot. Graham continued his good work and put in a fine cross that the ‘keeper could only palm away. Holland pounced on the ball to fire in a fine finish and his first goal for the club.

Another Hahndorf substitution saw David Grant enter the match and his twenty minute warm up paid off when he linked up with Medley to send Farrimond galloping down the flank. The industrious midfielder cut in towards goal and deceived the ‘keeper with a swerving shot at the near post for the Magpies eighth strike. For his efforts, Farrimond was replaced by Gibert Ward as Hahndorf once again dominated play.

Santangelo had a chance after intercepting a goalkick, but his shot could only find the keeper. The big German, Busch tried to get on the scoreboard before departing the country. He had a fine effort flick the crossbar from a corner situation, before Holland added his second, Santangelo crossing for the debutant to tuck away.

With the match nearing its end, Busch had two more chances but was unable to souvenir a goal before the final whistle. It was a commanding performance by the Hahndorf Magpies with contributions from all over the ground. Best on the day was Callum Graham, his play a constant threat, with Stubing’s four goals and Santangelo’s work rate also a highlight.

Reserves

The Hahndorf Reserves handed out an 11-0 hammering to the McLaren District reserves, to get their league campaign back on track.

The Magpies began the match well, forwards Jesse Konstantinoff and Max Gordon-Edwards putting the McLaren defence on notice with with some early chances. Midfielders Luke Jones, Gilbert Ward, Jordan Webber, Colin Hibbert and Chris Sawers sought to control the middle and often used the flanks to set up attacks.

A series of corners for the visitors saw the opening score, defender Luke Guest reacting quickly to bury a loose ball into the net. Hahndorf pressed forward and gained a second goal through Konstantinoff, the hard working forward firing in after some fine play by the Magpie midfield.

Hahndorf had a third when Gordon-Edwards collected a long corner and after a clever turn, found Guest at the near post, the big defender with a neat volley to put the Magpies in complete control.

McLaren District created few chances, Kyle Eglinton, Andy Craig and Guest cutting out many of the forward balls and ‘keeper James Nicholson was never under any real threat. Ward played his deep midfield role to perfection, thwarting District with some timely interceptions and sending the Magpies into attack.

Webber announced his arrival in the match with an extraordinary hat trick within twenty minutes, the hard charging midfielder riding a few tackles to forge his way into the area and finding the net with fine shots on three carbon copy occasions.

With a commanding 6-0 lead at half time the Magpies challenged themselves to maintain the intensity. Sawers continued to provide a great option on the flank, linking up with Konstantinoff and Gordon-Edwards. However it was Webber who once again showed the way, another bustling run and shot bringing his tally to four.

Changes by the Hahndorf coaching staff brought on “the Enforcer”, Rupert Lindon, Ben “Beninho” Wells and refined defender Bob Gordon-Edwards. Hahndorf continued to press, many opportunities arising from Jones’ long throws or Hibbert’s corner kicks. Konstantinoff earned himself a penalty after a rash District challenge and duly converted to get his second and Hahndorf’s eighth.

Craig added a ninth with a header after Jones and Hibbert combined to get a smart cross from a short corner as the visitors maintained their momentum. Konstantinoff completed his hat trick with another fine finish after some steady possession by the Magpies. Sawers completed the rout with a bundled goal from close in, another cross not dealt with by the home side.

In a comprehensive display Hahndorf had winners all over the park, but Jordan Webber was outstanding with his four goal contribution. Other notable involvements came from Luke Guest and Gilbert Ward, their work down the spine ensured the home side had little joy in the goal scoring department.

Super Cs
The news wasn’t so good for the Div 4 Cs, going down 3-0 to league leaders Strathalbyn, the spirited Magpies having an equalising goal disallowed in the opening half and the visitors knocking in two quick ones during the second half.

The Div 5 Cs also was on the wrong side of a 4-1 score line against St Peters, the 10 men of Hahndorf depleted by late illness. Holding their own for much of the match, the Magpies were 1-1 at half time, courtesy of a Jordi Kane free kick. Despite an excellent effort by all the Hahndorf players, they were eventually over run as exhaustion set in late into the match.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies will be looking to maintain their goal scoring form when they host Adelaide University at the Pine Avenue arena, with the Div 5 Cs kicking off the triple header by taking on the Adelaide Vipers in the 11am start. The Div 4 Cs are playing host to the intriguingly named Dragon Rangers at Mylor for their 3pm kick off.

Cup Rounds: Round One

Cup Rounds

Hahndorf suffered a frustrating 4-1 loss against the Southern Breakers on Saturday in the Amateur League Challenge Cup, their first defeat for the season.

Hahndorf began brightly with goalkeeper Nathaniel Brooke presiding over the defensive unit of Scott Taylor, Jon Lynn, Martin Busch and Matt Medley. Hahndorf’s engine room of Jordan Webber, Callum Graham, Steve Noble, Jack Farrimond along with strikers Kayne Stubing and Max Edwards dominated the early exchanges and the home team should have made their mark on the scoreboard.

Opportunities presented themselves frequently but the Magpies failed to take advantage as they seemed to have the measure of the Breakers but their shooting game was below par. After the opening twenty minutes, Hahndorf had spurned at least four clear-cut chances and these were to haunt them as the game developed.

The Southern Breakers took advantage of the Magpies profligacy and opened the scoring with a well-struck free kick that eluded the Hahndorf defence to find the back of the net. Hahndorf responded with a couple of fine moves, the best resulting in the levelling goal, Busch finding Stubing with a precision through ball. The Magpie forward aimed at goal, deceiving the Breakers’ ‘keeper with his strike to maintain his remarkable goal scoring run this season.

However, Hahndorf wasted further chances and again went behind after the Southern Breakers scored from a header, the Magpies unable to track the visitor’s movement from a corner and the home team went into half time on the wrong side of the 2-1 score line.

The play for Hahndorf did not improve much after half time, creating scoring opportunities but unable to capitalise as the Breakers began to gain more possession. Gilbert Ward, Alex Chapman and John Lawler were brought into the match but the Magpies fortunes were not to be altered.

Emboldened by the lack of accurate shooting from the home team, the Southern Breakers added two more goals to pile on the misery. Worse was to follow for the Magpies as they looked to be mounting a serious challenge, having a player sent off for a second bookable offence. With the cup tie effectively over after this action, both teams played out the remaining twenty five minutes with diminishing interest.

The best on the day for the Magpies was Kayne Stubing, with solid efforts from Martin Busch and Matt Medley in what turned out to be a fairly mediocre performance by the home team.

Hahndorf Reserves
The Hahndorf Reserves played their Reserve Cup match against Sunday 2nd Division side Bosna, the Mothers’ day fixture ending in an exciting 5-4 win for the Magpies.

Starting with James Nicholson in goal, the Magpies blended a team of youth and experience, veteran Andy Craig guiding a young defence of Jordan Kane, Kieran Guest and Rob Gillespie. Colin Hibbert, Jack Holland, Chris Sawers and Luke Jones drove the midfield with big man Mike Lewington and Jesse Konstantinoff providing the strike power.

The Magpies started well on the expansive pitch, looking lively in the opening exchanges against their more experienced opposition. Lewington and Konstantinoff were always a threat and Jones nearly broke the crossbar with a thunderous strike.
Bosna hit back with some close chances, the Hahndorf defence put under pressure as Nicholson was called into action. However, the Magpies struck first, a good period of pressure forced Bosna into some frantic clearances, one falling to Jones and he took full toll, blasting the ball past the home ‘keeper.

Both sides had further chances but were unable to capitalise as the half drew to an end. During the break Hahndorf rearranged the team and brought on Sam Wood and the move paid off handsomely. The Magpies went two goals up within minutes of the restart, Woods scoring with his first touch from close range after some tenacious work by Konstantinoff.

The Magpies then added two more, Jones getting his second and Konstantinoff scoring goal of the day with a curling shot that found the inside the far post. At 4-0 up with thirty minutes remaining, Hahndorf brought on Jay Bryson and Scott Schubert. Looking in control, the Magpies then let Bosna into the game, conceding three soft goals within ten minutes to add a few grey hairs and some consternation for the Hahndorf coaching staff as the match sparked into life.

The tempo increased and Hahndorf marshalled their defence as they sought to arrest Bosna’s momentum; Gillespie and Schubert playing wide and providing a release for the defence along with Sawers, Hibbert and Holland. With ten minutes remaining, Konstaninoff scored his second, breaking past the offside trap and exchanging passes with Holland before turning the ball into the Bosna net.

A final twist saw Bosna score their fourth with minutes left in the match but the young Hahndorf team showed their resolve to finally prevail 5-4 in the high scoring match.

Man of the match was Chris Sawers, with strong contributions from Jesse Konstantinoff and Luke Jones.

Super Cs
The Hahndorf Super Cs scored their maiden win of the season; an impressive 4-1 win over local rivals Stirling and atoning for their 1st round loss last week.

Player-Coach Edmondo “the Italian Maestro” Palombo fielded a young, exuberant team tempered with a couple of wise heads to take the match up to their more experienced rivals. Hahndorf’s spirited display brought its reward and the Magpies had a number of excellent perfomances all over the park, leaving Palombo exceedingly happy with his young side.

Next week the Hahndorf Magpies travel to the scenic Southern Vales to take on McLaren District while the Div 5 Cs are away to league leaders Strathalbyn and the Div 5 Cs are visiting St Peters.

Round 3: Hahndorf V Fliders University

Hahndorf V Flinders University
Handing out a 5-2 drubbing, Hahndorf gave Flinders University a footballing lecture, to keep the Magpies in second place in the South Australian Amateur Soccer League 3rd Division.

On a fine autumnal afternoon, the two teams played an even opening ten minutes, Flinders getting the first sight of goal but the effort passed harmlessly over the bar of James Nicholson‟s goal. Leo Santangelo replied for Hahndorf, firing wide after a good build up through Callum Graham and Kayne Stubing.

Hahndorf found a viable alley to goal on the right flank, Steve and Aaron Noble combining to carve open the Uni defence on numerous occasions. The Magpies gained control of the midfield with Tom Holland‟s distribution the foil to the industrious work of Jack Farrimond as Hahndorf enjoyed a period of sustained pressure on the University side.

The defence of Martin Busch, Jon Lynn and Scott Taylor were never truly stretched in the early going and Hahndorf underlined their authority with a brilliant move to open the scoring. Moving out from the back, Lynn, A.Noble and Holland played a series of short passes to bring the ball into the attacking third, Holland then sliced open the defence with a terrific pass to Graham. Bearing in on goal, Graham picked his spot and gave the University 'keeper no chance with a fine finish.

Looking to double their advantage, Santangelo broke forward and his on-target shot was deflected by the goalkeeper to Stubing but he hit his effort over the bar. Flinders hit back with a sharp move but the forward could only pick out Nicholson in goal with his header. Better was to come from the visitors however and they equalised with a bullet-like free kick from outside the penalty area.

Hahndorf stormed back to regain the lead, a corner by the Magpies only half cleared when Taylor‟s effort was blocked and Stubing stepped up to fire a shot through traffic into the corner of goal. The Magpies played out the rest of the half in control, A.Noble, Holland and Graham notable with some fine touches.

Hahndorf began the second half in stirring fashion, a quick break on the left releasing Stubing and he put in a superb angled cross to Santangelo. The athletic forward made good ground to stretch out a leg and guide a half volley past the exposed 'keeper for 3-1 lead.

Hahndorf kept on top of the game with some sustained pressure, Santangelo looking for his second when he shot just wide after the Magpies had forged an opening through some excellent midfield possession. Holland and A.Noble combined to threaten the Flinders‟ goal and forced a hasty clearance by their defence, the ball launched over the tennis courts. While waited for the ball to be couriered back, Hahndorf made their first substitution, bringing on Max Edwards for A.Noble.

The University side fought back to apply some pressure to the Hahndorf defence, but Lynn, S.Noble, Taylor and Busch limited the visitors chances. The big German then underscored his versatility with a magnificent goal from distance, curling a left-footer to the top, far corner after S.Noble picked him out with a smart throw.

The Magpies made further changes, Matt Medley and Shaun Smith replacing Taylor and Holland. The substitutes may have brought immediate reward when Graham and Smith exchanged passes and crossed for Edwards, but he was unable to find the target. Santangelo maintained his strong game with a shot from distance but it too passed just wide of the goal.

Hahndorf‟s persistence paid off when Stubing added his second and the Magpies fifth, Graham curling in a free kick for Stubing to bundle over the line, a pelvic thrust putting the visitors in their own time warp. The horror show may have continued for the Uni side, with Edwards, Smith and Graham keeping them pinned deep in their own half. However, to their credit, Flinders scored a late goal, a fine header catching Hahndorf napping at a corner with minutes remaining.

Man of the match was Callum Graham, the midfield maestro orchestrating much of Hahndorf‟s attacking verve, with great support from Leo Santangelo and Kayne Stubing, their work up front a constant threat to the Uni defence. A.Noble also drew special mention for his exceptional workrate during the first half.

Hahndorf Reserves

In a reverse score line to the First team match, the Hahndorf Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season, the sometimes spiteful match seeing the hosts squander an early lead to be eventually be over-run 5-2 by the visitors.

The Magpies started brightly, with Jordan Webber, Jesse Konstantinoff and Chris Sawers putting the Uni side on the back foot. Fine support in the midfield of David Grant, Gary Ledson, Colin Hibbert and Mike „the Wanderer” Lewington gave Hahndorf the edge in possession and it was a short time before their efforts brought the first goal.

Webber beat a Uni player and put in a deep cross to Sawers who headed back across to Konstantinoff and he fought hard to bundle to ball into goal. Hahndorf maintained the attacks through Bob Edwards, the cultured central defender turning back the years with a fine through ball to Konstantinoff, but he failed to find the target. Further opportunity presented itself with Sawers just firing wide and then Konstantinoff intercepted a short goal kick, but again the second goal remained elusive with the shot going over the bar.

Flinders woke up to the danger and began to force their way into the game, Hahndorf 'keeper Luke Jones making an excellent save from a one on one chance. Kyle Eglinton and Matt Medley provided defensive support and it was the former who created Hahndorf‟s second goal. A penetrating free kick found Grant and the experienced midfielder fired in a precise volley for a two-goal lead.

The visitors hit back with their first goal soon after and Hahndorf were forced to replace an injured Grant with Alex Chapman. Flinders began to assert themselves and equalised when the Magpies failed to hold possession from a goal kick. Further insult was added just before half time when the University side went ahead 3-2 after a solo run left Jones exposed.

Hahndorf brought on “the Enforcer” Rupert Lindon to stem the tide but the trend continued after half time with the visitors going close twice. The Magpies answered through Hibbert, who just missed after Konstantinoff fought hard to maintain pressure on the Uni defence. Medley then saved a certain goal with a goal line clearance as Ben “Beninho” Wells entered the fray.

Hahndorf had two good opportunities to score but the half time oranges had not improved their shooting and it was Flinders who made the most of their chances. A period of strong Uni play resulted in the visitors‟ fourth as Hahndorf struggled to control the midfield play. Chapman made some good plays but Hahndorf were unable to find the target when it counted. Eglinton went closest, a long curling free kick hitting the crossbar with the University custodian an anxious spectator.

Flinders added salt to the wound late on with a fifth goal and with a minute remaining could have had a sixth after a bit of petulance from the Magpie keeper resulted in a free kick close in, the chance going high and wide of goal.

Best on the day was Kyle Eglinton, a solid defensive display bolstered by his free kick deliveries. Jess Konstantinoff also provided a high point with his industrious work on the front line and Chapman showed a promising future with his time on the pitch.

In other results, the Div 4 Cs fought out a tight contest to be pipped 2-1 by Flinders University and Chris Hyde got on the scoreboard in the Div 5 Cs 3-1 loss to BOSA.

Next week is a cup round with the First team hosting the Southern Breakers on Saturday and the Reserves playing away to Bosna on Sunday. The Div 5 Cs are also away to local rivals Stirling and the Div 4 Cs have the week off.
